I'm with you man. ICS and JB are both excellent operating systems, with very little to improve upon. With that said, I still installed Nova Launcher, and DialerEx (I'm running a GNex with 4.1.2). It would be nice if the stock launcher and dialer could do just some of the extra things those two do. But, that combination gives me everything I could ever want, without the need for any custom roms.

All of these problems can be circumvented with just a few mouse clicks and swipes on your phone.
As for JB 4.2 the two features I'm looking forward to the most is the photo sphere and FINALLY a standardized swiping keyboard. Can't wait to see what kind of tricks the JBSourcery team comes up with for the Galaxy Nexus.


Yep with my rooted nexus 7 it feels like a pocket computer the potential is AMAZING! so happy i rooted and custom ROM/ Kernel. Battery life is amazing, custom DPI, themes its endless.

Custom ROMs just improve non used battery life. If you use the phone its killed the same way. For example my GNex can idle much longer with custom ROM but it will not get 1 second more of screen time.

It is true that custom roms have longer battery life when idle. However, they drain the battery faster when you are using the phone compared to stock.

also most custom roms tends to be buggy.


ports like CM10 or MIUI on the other hand are meh.

they use generic drivers instead so its like running an HD 7979 or GTX 680 with windows drivers.

it is very evident especially on the camera. it takes worse pictures with it compared to stock.

Not always. It depends on how you have it set up. I have been able to get far better battery life in actual use on custom ROM and kernel than stock because I can modify how the brightness is done, how fast/slow the governor ramps up/down, file system checks, voltages at specific speed steps, regulator voltages, and clock speeds. Also I went from 17~ hours of battery life when mostly idle to a bit over 48 hours of mostly idle time. And that is with 4G connected the whole time with Verizon
