an hd 7850 seems like overkill for 1280*1024 ... my son has my old hd 6790 on his 1280*1024 ... his bottleneck is the athlon ii x2 250. thankfully the highest spec game he plays is tf2

I think this guy needs to read up on how games use GPU and CPU. Just get a 1080 monitor and the 7850, and see what your CPU usage is like, then think about OCing or replacing the mobo/cpu later. I think the 1080 monitor will be enough to blow you away for a while if you are coming from 1024

i agree ... gta4 was a badly ported game to boot. i play gta at "1080p" just fine. like i said before i have a similar cpu @ a similar speed and play games at more than playable fps ... some games on "very high" and "ultra", but most on "high".

actually fear 3 was very playable and so was mafia 2 and i think i will only upgrade my gpu to hd 7850

My rig plays BF3 smooth at high and it looks lovely, the CPU is sitting at about 85% usage. The 7850 will play it much better, and your CPU will probably be fine, might need to OC it a bit.

I'd even get the monitor before the 7850 in your case. Gaming on 1024 must be a joke in 2012.
