Help !!! i think my loop is starting to grow algae

Thread Starter
Hi guys

So this is my first loop.

I honestly think that i have drained and filled it over 30 times now... And its starting to show a little bit of algae it is not yet visible at first sight but if you pay a closer look its starting to show. I am using a silver coil fitting along with a silver strip that i have added to my res so i could slow the growth down a bit. Using mayhems pastel white UV blue.

So the main question is what can i do to help with this problem???? can i add some fluids to my loop and get away with it ??? or do i need to strip the hole thing down and wash every component and tubing ???

Any help would be appreciated guys,.

Thank you

Shremi

if you're using that much silver, are you sure it's algae? have you done a pH test? the strips can be kind of pricey (I got a pack at wal-mart, was like $17)

you could drain about 20% of your loop and replace it with Alkylene Glycol which will kill any algae in there (if you can't get any biocide or don't wanna wait), but to actually clean it you'll have to take the loop apart

I bought this at walmart also, for like $6 or $7 USD

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Prestone-Cooling-System-Antifreeze-Treatment/16889201

It will make your water cloudy and has a chemical odor to it, and is toxic. So make sure you don't let your pets around it if you spill it

Honestly, I'd use your computer as is right now and then just clean your tubes out after getting the biocide drops.

Personally I would take the longer route of stripping down the loop replacing the tubes and scrubbing out your blocks.

May take a bit longer but once done you'll be good for the long haul. Also it's possibably the cheapest method.

I would have thought the mayhems would kill anything in there, unless it's really taken hold properly before that was put in.

If you suspect algae, and you're pretty sure about that, I'd strip down, scrub and change all the tubing. Alternatively, for less work, you could just change tubing then flush several times with DI+Biocide.

I think using biocide drops will not improve the situation since if the biocide already in the mayhems hasn't done the trick, extra biocide won't and you'll just change the PH of the fluid by adding more.

First, I guess I'd contact mayhems - see if the biocide in the pastel might have "worn out" and if adding more was advisable.

Like someone said above anti freeze works great to prevent and kill any algae. Though Now that algae is already in your system you may as well replace all the tubes (which are super cheap at any hardware store) and clean your blocks and rads. I used premixed anti-freeze in my system that looks green and works great for keeping everything clean.
