on-board sound does not allow me to record 1-channel

Thread Starter
I recently bought an HP computer that's mostly decent, except for one big problem that's ruining my ability to record youtube videos for a game I play. When I record my voice, it only records into the left speaker rather than both, as was the case with my old computer. I can use programs like Audacity to cheat around this, but it takes a lot of extra work. Anyway, I have discovered the exact reason for this, I just don't know how to fix it: my on-board sound (realtek 64-bit) only allows for 2-channel recording. in sounds > recording > mic properties > advanced, my options are 2-channel CD quality, 2-channel dvd quality, and 2-channel studio quality. What I need is 1-channel studio, but I have no idea how to make this option accessible. My computer tells me all my drivers are up to date, and I can't find drivers for this specific headset (Turtle Bay Earforce Z2) anywhere. Any advice on how I should proceed? Thanks.

edit - the more i look around the internet, the more it seems as though i've gotten screwed on my on-board sounds. which brings me to buying a sound card. the question is, do i absolutely need to buy a sound card that i install into the computer, or would something like this work? http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Beach-Advantage-Headset-Adapter/dp/B0036VO4XO/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1351574613&sr=8-5&keywords=usb+sound+card
