i7 3930k OC vs stock for gaming, worth? any difference?

Before I start, my pc:
I7 3930k
Gtx 690
Corsair H100
Corsair dominator platinum 16gb 1866 mhz
SSD OCZ 256gb
HD 3TB Western digital
ASUS rampage formula IV
Thermatake mk1 (case)
Coolermaster silente pro 1000w

Hello humans, a few days ago I OCed my cpu to 4.4Ghz, it was running at 37 degrees iddle and 60-65 running battlefield 3 on ultra settings and 67-75 degrees max running prime95 torture test.

After I OCed it I noticed that the coolers started to run really fast, a lot faster than before, it was so NOISY....I already had the h100 on the 3rd profile, so Idk why it started to run faster by itself....anyway its cool because it keeps the cpu cold smile.gif
the thing is that yesterday something in windows went wrong, bootmrg is missing bla bla bla....had to reinstal windows and here I am.... don't know if should OC again or not...I dont have the time or the skills to OC and remove OC all the time and test performance in games, so the question is....will it change my FPS in games? I think I noticed an improvement in battlefield 3, but it could be just my imagination.

Not really, unless your looking to gain ~1-5 fps from no where lol, not much of a difference overall.

it might seem to run "smoother"

unless your running GTA4 , geez that game can't run without a quad core... so laggy.

It helps by increasing minimum fps in heavy games/titles and in some cases improves micros-stuttering.
The BSOD you got seems like an SSD error and could happen again. Update your OCZ firmware to the latest one.
Oc'ing can corrupt an os but it is sooo rare.... unlucky I guess.
I say oc again but you need to test how stable it is before playing any games. Prime95 is a good stress test.

I used to run mine OC'd to 4.5. One time though, I accidentally reset my OC and didn't notice. For four months. Not many games will benefit from having an overclock on such an already powerful system. BF3 doesn't really change any. Been running it at stock with no issues at all.

The only real, logical reason to put an OC on it is if you do anything that utilizes CPU primarily, like transcoding and such. Other than that, save the power and stress on the components.

Unless, of course, you just want to.

If you plan to play planetside 2 that releases Nov 20th or get a beta key. That OC will help greatly. The game is currently super CPU dependent. But outside of games like that, you won't see a massive shift..

well yeah, 5GHZ.

lol

Such as my PPD if F@H would look around 20k ppd at stock 24k at 4.6ghz,

but 36kppd at 4.8 and 50kppd at 5.0ghz. its not very scalar.

5GHZ is a little hard to reach for just gaming.

biggrin.gif So it is exactly what Swolern wrote -> 4-way SLI -> 20FPS/4= 5 FPS

lol, 5ghz is cool yeah. But get15 fps more when the game already runs at 80-150 fps...no sense for me xD
your comment helped, if have to OC to 5 to get 15 fps...no thank you, I will keep my cpu cold and I will OC it when some game runs at less than 80-120 fps
