RAM is cheap...stick with 8GB, just because you can. smile.gif

However, I agree that the CPU could be dropped down to an i3/E3 and still have great performance, if this box is purely for file storage. I run my 9261-8i and HP SAS Expander in a box with 8GB of RAM (going to upgrade to 16GB for the hell of it) and an E3-1220v2, and it does great. It's a quad core with no HT (the E3-1230v2 has HT). If it's purely for file storage, venture down FreeNAS...or some NAS specific OS. If you plan to do anything else, go with WHS (local PC backups being the big one, IIRC...WHS can do this great, and I don't think FreeNAS can).

Have you decided what hardware raid level you'll be going with yet?
Edit: That being said though, there's nothing wrong with the parts you've chosen. But if you were doing it on a tight budget you could get away with a lot less.

Well i plan on using the server to steam content to either a Laptop/xBox/PS3 in the house for the likes of TV & movies i have stored on it as well as having torrents running in the background when required.

I was just going to run RAID 5 so i have the redundancy if something bad goes wrong down the line.

As you say i can get away with less on some parts but i like to have something that has the potential to go further than having to upgrade as i skimped out in the first place if you get me ?

With you saying that i think i may go WHS as i would like to create a back up of my gaming rig files along with a laptop or two in the house just for safe measure.

Im i right in saying that WHS allows me to access my files from anywhere using the supplied web address created for my server once set up ?

Yeah I get you. That's why i don't compress my blu-ray rips.

Looks like it's going to be a powerful build.

I am not an expert with WHS (I prefer just running full blown server at home), but I know that it has a pretty web interface that you can use your on domain name with, and I think you can access your files with that. For the record, Windows Home Server no longer exists (you can still get it, but the line was dropped) since Microsoft was tired of small business' using WHS instead of Small Business Server. So there is the new Windows Server 2012 Essentials, which is a mix of WHS and SBS...and is really cool. I have done 1 install of it, just to check it out...and while I don't have a use for it, it can do everything WHS can plus more.
