Need a New Pair of Headphones That Would Double as a Gaming Headset.

Thread Starter
As the title suggests I'm looking to get a new pair of headphones that'll be used for listening to music and would also double as a capable gaming headset for Battlefield 3 etc.

Things you might want to know:
  • I'd preferably want to spend $150 or less.
  • Must have a 3.5mm audio jack
  • Needs to look good tongue.gif

I think I should add that I like to listen to alot of Rammstein, they're known for the lead singer's powerful bass voice, lots of heavy guitar riffs and keyboard/synth sounds so ideally I'd like those to be more pronounced when I listen to them (well I guess basically anything is an upgrade to my $30 Sennheiser IEMs.)

I also like bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Metallica, Disturbed (well you get the picture). I also listen to some progressive house music and dubstep sometimes.

As for the gaming aspect of things I play alot of Battlefield 3 so having surround sound is a big plus, I'd like a detachable microphone so I don't look like a **** when I'm listening to my iPod with it.

So far I've been looking at the Razer Blackshark as I really like the overall looks of it, apparently its great for music as well as gaming and the microphone is really clear (heard someone talk through it).

Any and all recommendations are welcome, thanks! smile.gif

Ultrasone Pro 550 is your best bet. Its the best mix for bass and sound stage you will get in a headphone for that price.

If you want something a little better for gaming over the music you listen to, go with the AKG K240II. They are still good for music but might not have the bass you're looking for.

The Denon D1100/1000 would be my pick for the best all around at that price but you would have to buy them used or wait for a sale, they drop to ~$120 price often.

Edit: I should also add that the Denons and the AKGs will be more comfortable on your head for extended use. The Ultrasones arent really that comfortable as you will see in a lot of reviews you read about them. They aren't bad or unbearable, just something to think about as well.

When I was in the market for a new set, I was looking for the exact same thing. I did a lot of research and ended up picking the Ultrasone Pro 550. I think they will be exactly what you're looking for, I've had mine for about 10 months now and I have no regrets at all. I will have to warn you that the cord that comes with them is extremely short so you should probably buy an extension. The cord screws into the set so you will have to use an extension with it, replacing the cord is not an option unless they sell one specifically for the set on the Ultrasone website.

That or just buy a 1/4in to 1/8in adapter assuming your sound card is a 1/8 jack and use the longer coiled cable.

Also, you want to get a decent sound card if you don't have one already. Good headphones don't make much of a difference if you don't have dolby headphone or CMSS-3D and a decent DAC.
