[TH]Apple, Samsung Control 106% of Handset Industry's Profits - Page 2

You can't however, post a negative market share smile.gif Therefor you can never own more than 100% of the market share.
For instance,
A hundred people use an OS.
Windows : 91% (91 people)
Apple : 6% (6 people)
Linux : 2% (2 people)
Others : 1% (1 person)
That's 100% in total.
Let's assume everyone leaves Apple, Linux and others and start using Windows. It also gains 10 new users.
That would make :
Windows : 110 people
Apple : 0 people
Linux : 0 people
Others : 0 people
That's a total of 110 people out of 110, not 100. Therefor it is still 100% in total. Only when you compare Windows in the previous assumption to Windows in the second assumption, one can see an increase that exceeds 100% but that's no longer market share, that's just a comparison of numbers, put in to percentages.
I hope I understood that right smile.gif

again, makes no sense, if ppl leave apple, linux etc, the market itself shrinks, hence, ppl leaving apple and switching to win or anyone, would mean the market still is the same, unless there are ppl coming from outside the selected samples.

You're assuming I haven't. Please explain the method used to come up with the conclusion of 106%, since you seem to have read more of the whole of the article than I have.

That would make Microsoft the only one with users, thereby owning 100% of the market share.

100% is everything. How can they have more than everything ?

edit:
I get it !
For the sake of argument, lets just say that this quarter's profits were like this :
Samsung : 12$
Apple : 17$
RIM, Nokia, Motorola : -2$ (a loss)
Entire market profit : 12+17-2 = 27
Samsung and Apple profit : 12+17 = 29
Therefor Samsung and Apple made 29$ of the 27$ in profit of the entire market, which is more than 100% biggrin.gif

see, your calculation is flawed, you cannot add the 2m loss from rim, nokia and motorolla to samsung and apple's profit

if we're both selling pancakes and i went bankrupt because nobody is buying my pancakes anymore then you are now getting 100% from the consumers.

my 100 pancakes that didn't got sold costed me 50 dollars, so i lost 50 dollars because i didn't sold those, you can't add my 50 dollar loss to your profit unless i give those unsold pancakes to you and sell them.

If you compare something to something else you can have over 100% compared to something else. Like if i gain 6 bullets and you gain 6 we both have 50% of the gains. But if you shoot 9 bullets i now have effectively 150% of the gains as you lost some. Its because we are talking about profits and those can go negative that can cause you to have more than 100% when compared to another.

I didn't.

I said, let's assume Apple and Samsung made 29$, while RIM/Nokia/Motorola didn't make any money infact they lost 2$.

Therefor the market (all the companies together) made 27$ of profit. You cannot exclude the 2$ the others lost from this, just because it isn't a positive profit but instead a negative profit. Which means that the profit that Apple and Samsung made (29$) is more than the entire market made, due to the losses posted by others.

But judging by some of the posts above, I don't seem to be able to explain this to others, sorry redface.gif , nonetheless I'm glad I get it smile.gif

i guess there is but one way by which the claim can be true:

Apple + Samsung profit = $50
Nokia + rim profit = ($2) (loss)

Net profit from All of the above = 50+ (-2) = $48

Since loss is incurred by nokia and rim and the likes, we cannot and will not apportion the loss to Apple & Samsung

Therefore, they still have $50 profit.

so, looking at the entire industry samsung and apple made 50 (samsung & Apple)/48 (Industry profit) = 104%

By their logic, even if samsung and apple did not have any profit at all, as long as the others are losing money, samsung and apple still have 6% profit? Makes any sense?
