The RAM upgrade dilemma

Thread Starter
Hello gentlemen,

I'm thinking of upgrading the amount of RAM on my spare rig (see my signature, I'm currently using it to experiment with windows 8), and I will likely put some extra RAM in my main rig as well (see signature). Basically, the spare rig would be upgraded from 4 to 8 GB (ditching the old 1333MHz RAM), and my main rig would be upgraded from 8 to 16 GB. This provides me with several options, and the following are the ones I am mainly considering:
  • Put the 8GB from my main rig (Kingston HyperX Genesis 8GB @1600MHz CL9, KHX1600C9D3X2K2/8GX) in my spare rig, and buy 16 gigs of new RAM for my main rig. The new ram would most likely not be too crazy, maybe 16GB of Corsair Vengeance (CML8GX3M2A1600C9) @ 1600MHz CL9.
  • Buy 8GB of Corsair Vengeance (CML8GX3M2A1600C9) @ 1600MHz CL9 and put it in my spare rig. Buy 8GB extra Kingston HyperX Genesis to get my main rig up to 16GB.
  • Buy 16GB of the Kingston HyperX, put 8GB in my spare rig, and 8GB extra in my main rig.

Bascially, the main question is: is the HyperX Genesis faster or slower than the Corsair Vengeance? Knowing the answer to this question would allow me to decide which kind of RAM should go in my spare rig and which kind should go in my main rig. I'm kind of hoping to keep the HyperX in my main rig as I think it looks better (I'm using the special gray edition, not the IMO ugly blue ones). Another thing to consider is: is it better to have two sticks of 8GB or 4 of 4GB? If 2 sticks is better, I guess it could be a reason to go for all new ram in my main rig.

I'm also open to suggestions; if you think that I should for example just get some crazier RAM for my main rig, please let me know. Or maybe you think 16GB isn't worth it at all. Any opinion will be highly appreciated.

They are both the same speed and latency and the less sticks of ram the better the OC general speaking. Try to not mix and match ram. Kingston offer a life time warranty and will actually value said warranty so long as they have the product in stock or will offer an equal or better value product. Also unless you have specific task/s 16gb at this time and notable future is a waste.

I'd buy some of that Sumsung Wonderram, usually overclocks to 2133mhz or over, and has great timings.

Personally, unless you do a ton of things like video editing, there is no use for more than 8GB.

I know the Samsung can get the job done. They are also VERY fun to OC. From 1600 c11@ 1.35v to 2133 c9 @ 1.48v

I am currently considering the mushkins for an upgrade of my own. I am just hoping they can reach comparable speeds at 8GB/stick

The Samsung memory seems nice, but it's barely available here in the Netherlands. There 3 shops selling them, starting at !64 euro! for 8GB, while something like the aforementioned corsair memory sells for 35 for 8GB...

It wont really make a difference.

I recommended the kits that I know of that are fun to tweak because they have such tremendous headroom.

If you want, get something that looks cool and is cheap.

Real world gains from 1600mhz to 2600MHz are pretty negligible.

And I thank you for that thumb.gif. Only problem is that both the kits you suggested are barely/not available here in the Netherlands. The Samsung only at around twice the cost it should be and the Mushkin not at all as far as I could tell. If you happen to have any other suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Any thoughts on the GeIL Black Dragon 2133MHz CL10 kits (8GB, 2x4)? They look pretty sweet, and aren't expensive at €50 for 8GB...

The Geil you mentioned are most likely Hynix CFR, which is weaker than Samsung at lower frequencies.
