Backing op computers while in Linux.

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
So I want to switch to a Linux server, from WHS, but there seems to be no good method for backing up computers with Linux. So I have an idea.

Could I run VMware ESX, with a Linux and WHS vm? And let whs do the backups and Linux for everything else?

If I did that, how would I split up the disk space? Could I somehow share it between the VMs?

My server has been a dual core Athlon 2, and 4 gb of ram

If you don't already run ESXi, I'd do that - you'll find more uses for it eventually anyway.

That said, there are good cross-platform backup solutions. Crashplan for example, although I'm not sure if that creates restorable images that you can boot from if that's what you're looking for.

Splitting up disk space is really easy - you just create a datastore that ESXi can access, then each VM gets provisioned from that space. You can thin-provision, so disk space is only allocated when it's actually used.

If by shared you mean both VMs to have simultaneous access to the same disk space, then that would be a little more difficult since you'd need to either:

(1) run a filesystem that was capable of simultaneous mounts (and that was available on both Windows and Linux),

or (easier)

(2) mount the disk space to the linux box, create a share on it, have the windows VM access that share and do it's backups to there.

Option 2 you'd use either SAMBA or NFS.

I mulled this issue for a while myself. Many people suggested AMANDA, or a project based on it. It seems to work well, but it's not as pain free as most of the Windows solutions out there, for either backing up or restoring.

What I ended up doing was putting Acronis True Image on any of the machines I want to back up, and setting Acronis to save to a network Samba share on the Linux server. Works flawlessly.

@OP

Look at Amahi Home Server. Like WHS it can back up client computers to itself. Look here for more detail.
