Bonus points for GPUs

Thread Starter

Haven't seen this in a dedicated thread yet, so figured I'd make one. Similar to the previous thread I posted - that GPUs and CPUs can complete the same types of WU - PG have decided to implement the QRB (Quick Return Bonus) system for GPUs. As some of the other teams have found out, initial PPDs are showing some fo the 6xx series (and the 570/580 I think) to be getting over 200k PPD - pushing single GPUs into 4p territory.

Now, at the moment there is only one of these WUs in ciruclation (P8057, a beta WU), so this might change when the final WUs are released (Folders who were around for the GPU3 release will remember GTS 450s handling the beta WUs fine, but then falling away from higher end GPUs as the bigger WUs were brought out). However, sicne this has been internal testing by PG for some time, I think it's safe to assume this is the type of PPD range we can come to expect, unless there is some massive outcry from the Folding community.

On that note, there are several discussions around (the main links for the threads I've seen are linked below), and the purpose of this thread is to get some comments going on OCN - both on actual results Folders here are seeing, as well as future implications for our team and the Folding@Home project.

I can't wait for this to happen. I GPU fold on 2 GTX 560Ti's (OC'd to 900MHz) and 2 GTX 580's (OC'd to 925MHz).

If GPUs do a better job for the specific things Stanford are currently looking at then I'm ok with them being proportionally better in points, same as I would be if it were 4Ps that fit Stanford's needs best. I also believe though that every WU completed is worthwhile, even if it isn't a huge point WU so I don't feel bad that my 2700k won't also do 200k PPD.

What do we need to do to get set up to get this beta unit? Just v7 and client-type advanced in the GPU slot, or is there a client-type beta? It looks like v7 is becoming more and more the way to go, because I think people get better points on v7 for single CPUs as well.

Yeah, this was brought up in a previous thread, I decided not to post anything as it was just beta for now.

From my understanding (read that as I didn't look in to this much), they are working on a new method of benchmarking all WU's the same way rather than have the separate stream of SMP, Nvidia GPU, and AMD GPU if I'm not mistaken. This means adding the QRB to all WU's in the future.

I have yet to hear if this will also apply to AMD GPU WU's in the future and how the points will be adjusted.

In the mean time, next time you get a p762x work unit, the new Core_15 version 2.25 will be pushed to your client, and your PPD will drop by 30-40% on all current work units.mad.gif

Subbed.

Having 7 6XX series gpus and 4 5XX gpus, I could see a significant increase in my contributions.

For what I have read this doesn't included any 4XX series cards? If not, I will be upgrading all my 460's to 660's

Depending on what the difference between the 5xx and 6xx are in PPD, you might just want to save HALF your money and go with 5xx cards.

An EVGA GTX 680 will set you back $475 at the cheapest. An EVGA GTX 560Ti is $180 after mail in rebate. If the PPD is only 15-20% different, then for the price of 2 GTX 680's, you could get 5 GTX 560 Ti's and still come out ahead in PPD.

I'm thinking that if the 560Ti's turn good numbers, you could build up a Quad SLi machine with 4 GTX 560Ti's for right about $1200 and have something that might rival most 4P machines at $3000.

Heck, the EVGA GTX 570's are only $220 after mail in rebate. They are a little more than the 560Ti's, but still should turn in good numbers. $880 for video, $50 for memory, $240 for a quad SLi motherboard, $200 for a CPU, $230 for a 1kw PSU, and $40 for Windows 8 ... $1640 for a nasty PPD box ... less if you go used parts.
