And anyways unless you're trying to be old-windows compatible you should use .cmd instead of .bat/

.cmd is old too - it has been supported since at least Windows 2000.
Still better than bat, and that just makes it even better

What difference does the extension make? Are the files parsed differently, or is it just naming convention best practices?

It makes one difference - handling of ERRORLEVEL. However its fairly restrictive to certain scenario that there is effectively no difference.

Reading though that link, it seems .cmd is an OS/2 throwback. So dates much further back than even Win2000.

I did wonder if CMD had it's roots in NT while BAT was DOS (not least because NT ships command.com as it's command shell). This would seem to confirm that.

Yep, BAT was rooted from DOS and 9x. NT ships command.com, but cmd.exe is its command shell, so not sure where you're going with that one (or I misinterpreted tongue.gif)
For the record 64-bit NT doesn't ship any of the legacy command processors and only hung around on 32-bit versions to support the NTVDM.

---
Anyway what's with all this batch file crap... why aren't you using PowerShell! smile.gif

PowerShell would likely be a better route for some of these things.
But some are just simple switches which can be implemented in a .bat file.

Did the OP say which version of Windows they're targeting?

Here's PowerShell to do most of those things (some of them are not necessary to do)
Code:
# Disable system restore on each fixed volume
Foreach( $item in [System.IO.DriveInfo]::getdrives() )
{
    If ( $item.drivetype -eq [System.IO.DriveType]::Fixed )
    {
        Write-Host "Disabling restore for $item"
        Disable-ComputerRestore "$item"
    }
}

# Disable drive index for C:
DisableIndexing "C:"

# Disable SuperFetch service (while this is OK, don't turn off usual prefetching, this is stupid)
Write-Host "Disabling SuperFetch service"
Set-Service sysmain -startupType Disabled

# Disable Windows Search (this is also stupid)
Write-Host "Disabling Windows Search service"
Set-Service wsearch -startupType Disabled

# Disable scheduled defrag
Write-Host "Disabling scheduled defrag task"
iex 'schtasks /change /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Defrag\ScheduledDefrag" /Disable' | Out-Null

# Disable hibernation
Write-Host "Disabling hibernation"
iex "powercfg -h off"

# Disable 8.3 name creation
Write-Host "Disabling 8.3 name creation on NTFS"
iex "fsutil.exe behavior set disable8dot3 1" | Out-Null

# Change NTFS memory usage to increase the usage of paged-pool for various caches
Write-Host "Changing NTFS memory usage value"
iex "fsutil.exe behavior set memoryusage 2" | Out-Null

#####################
# Sub-routines
#####################
function DisableIndexing
{
    Param($Drive)
    $obj = Get-WmiObject -Class Win32_Volume -Filter "DriveLetter='$Drive'"
    $state = $obj.IndexingEnabled

    if ( $state -eq $True )
    {
        Write-Host "Disabling drive index for $Drive"
        $obj | Set-WmiInstance -Arguments @{IndexingEnabled=$False} | Out-Null
    }
}

$option = Read-Host "Reboot computer? (Y/N)"
If ($option -eq "Y")
{
        Restart-Computer
}
