Unfortunately this has a lot to do with pricing.

Had they announced a new copy of Win 7 with SP2 slip stream for 15$ too, have a feeling sales would have been phenomenal as well.

I am pretty sure Win 7 made them a heck of a lot more money then Win 8 did at 10~40$ per purchase, considering low end Win 7 was 100$ at launch, and up to $300 for Ultimate.

Edit:
Ouch, their marketing for Win 8 alone is roughly 1.8$ Billion.

Being a Linux only guy myself, had I had a Windows computer I would of upgraded purely because of the price. If they would have asked another $100++ for an upgrade then I would have simply laughed. But $40 to upgrade is really nothing for most people.
I upgraded upon the day of release. Never looked back. Windows 8 is just too good. I didnt like the beta really but this final release is so smooth and integrated. Really doubted MS on this one but they really did a good job.

Also for me this had nothing to do with price. I bought the full price 69.99 upgrade.

Looks like Windows 8 is doing quite well despite all the criticism. Plus, I wonder how many % of the 4M was $15 purchases biggrin.gif

Hehe. I got in on that wagon!

Its interesting to see people posting the "Unfortunately its only because of the price" thing.

Unfortunately?

I feel quite fortunate that the first OS that MS offers for a reasonable price for me to actually buy Windows for the first time in my life is one that I like.

Besides, since when is offering customers value, and them appreciating that value by reacting via strong sales an "unfortunate" turn of events?

Not much when you have $60 billion in retained earnings. They also offered Windows 7 for $50 pre-launch and free upgrades to those on Vista. Not sure what a Service Pack has to do with this, they've never charged for one.

I know I didn't upgrade.

These are upgrades, not OEM sales. It mentions nothing of OEM sales.

Not to mention copies that were sold to computer companies like HP and Dell, that have actually not been delivered yet, but rather just "sold".

Its 4 Million upgrade copies sold, This has nothing to do with OEM sales

edit, BizzareRide beat me to it

Even if it includes OEM sales, windows 7 had OEM sales too
