Since Windows 8's UI focused on tablets (from which consumers demand the best battery life possible), Microsoft seems to have found what I consider the best balance for keeping UI from eating up GPU resources (which would deplete the charge of a battery faster) while making it look more attractive than the Windows Classic interface by going with a basic color scheme. I would rather just use the Windows Classic UI as I'm not concerned about how pretty the UI looks as long as it's resource efficient and intuitive.
