FTP build

Thread Starter
Well Im glad that work has been picking up and I wanted to discuss building an FTP so clients can send files direct instead of going through my website. I really wouldnt mind trying my have at some ubuntu perhaps. I build a rig for bash scripting and Im enjoying it but sometimes its hard to search for on how to do something. Any ideas or discussions perhaps?? I wouldnt mind a few tutorials to watch or read.

What's your goal here? Are these clients customers of yours, do they already know how to use the site? Do you want a web interface or just FileZilla and similar?

FTP is very simple to setup, but I'm going to suggest SFTP. Just to be safe.

SFTP (which uses SSH) or FTPS which is traditional FTP over SSL. It means that you will need an SSL certificate, but you can create a self-signed one. Or, you could get a free one from StartCom.

A good way to start would be to create a test Ubuntu server using VirtualBox and Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS. During the install process Ubuntu Server will ask you what kind of server you want to create. I can't remember if FTP is on that list; if it is then select it and OpenSSH. If not, then select OpenSSH and complete the install.

After that, install ProFTPD and Webmin. In fact if you install Webmen first, you can install ProFTPD from within Webmin. By the time you've finished you'll have both file transfer options and an administration console installed.
