[Gamasutra] Breaking: Disney buys LucasArts - Page 11

Another beautiful part of my childhood. Ruined. I can't wait for a Re-Re-Mastered version of Star Wars movies. However, I'm glad to be a proud owner of a Blu-Ray copy of the completely original and un-altered Star Wars movies.

Disney. What on earth were you thinking??

I actually like this.
The prequel trilogy suffered from being overly focused on the technology, the bad dialogue, and probably just having no one around that could really contend with Lucas in production to create balance.

Disney have bought Marvel Films and Pixar and since then they haven't been disasters. I think they can really make something great out of this. I hope they use or don't ignore the expanded universe material. I don't view Disney as any worse than any of the other huge film companies. I think worst case scenario for a Star Wars is to be like the prequel trilogy. I hope they don't handle them just action films with a plot to navigate the action akin to their comic book films.

The hope would be that they bring in an ambitious director and writers that would try to create something that can stand on its own rather than just piggybacking off the success of the originals.

I won't look at this as something to fear unless I see something as bad as a trailer of a Jedi is running around spewing one-liners as he slices through everything. The universe has a lot of material to work with. It would be nice to see what a screenwriter and director besides Lucas can do. I think they can be more ambitious seeing as just putting Star Wars in the title should guarantee a good amount of sales. At least they aren't doing a remake.

A sequel though doesn't have me hopeful. I would have preferred something from the older eras of the Universe so they wouldn't have to tie in as hard to the previous films.

At this point I have a whole lot more faith in Disney then I do George Lucas.

The only EU books I ever read was the Thrawn trilogy and that was pretty good. I highly doubt they use any of the EU stuff however.

In fact it'd be smart if they didn't because they can just start the entire thing over. I imagine at this point major characters are dying in the EU timeline from age, lol.

It would be good if they came out with an original story in the universe but I hope they don't retcon the living hell out of everything. The universe is large enough that they can do something without invalidating they years of stories written already.

If this is a direct sequel to Episode 6 or anything close, they probably would though rather than being restricted by other past works which why I wish they would explore something besides the movie time period but that would probably be too risky for really any money minded studio to do.

So now Disney own Pixar, Marvel comics AND Star Wars, etc?! It won't be long until they buy out some major gaming publisher like EA or Activision.

I don't see this happening any time soon. Disney bought LucasArts because they can leverage the IPs (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) gained in multiple ways, not only can they create and market new toys/action figures, but they can create new themeparks/rides, and of course can create new movies. Honestly, it looks like Disney couldn't care less about creating video games for consoles, as their CEO has stated that they will be focusing on the social gaming market and will be releasing games onto consoles "opportunistically" by licensing out the franchise to other companies.

I'm actually very excited about this, Lucas was running the franchise into the ground. Disney has been doing some fantastic work over the years and can't wait to see what is going to happen. Additionally not just episode 7 was announced, but 8 and 9 as well. The new trilogy is supposed to take place a couple of decades after Ep. 6 and yes Luke, Leia, and Han will be back. Mark Hamill is confirmed/slated to reprise, Ford I bet will do it, Fisher needs to lose some weight but she can pull it off.

Darth Vader was ultimately the main focus, and I feel that it was pretty terrible. The origins of Darth Vader are not important really, but the points you mentioned also definitely were not helping.

i thought the novels went way past 6, some of Luke's Ancestors turn sith, and can use that Dark Life thingy that brings people back to life.

Edit: we need a force unleashed Movie to link 3&4 as Marek kickstarted the rebellion
