Do you think a 3770k would be a better option?

I really think you should tell him to wait till he can afford a better video card. A 7950 is a great deal at the price. That being said I love my 670.

Maybe build the system w/ out a video card and then add it in a month later or whenever. a 580 is not very future proof for a system he wants to last 5-6 years....

a little over you budget but the GTX 670 physx can be used in the software you may work on and the 3770k with be a perfect cpu for cpu intensive softwares and both of them can easily max out any game at 1080p single screen smile.gif lastly overclock you can overclock you 3770K to ~4.7Ghz according toTHIS and THIS reviews and that HSF will i guess handle those Overclocks with decent temp good luck pal thumb.gif
Hope that helped thumb.gif
