Look what I found!

Hello OCN wave2.gif

So i was emptying out a lockup today, and found a couple of these rolleyes.gif

unfortunately, the wires have been cut and they have no header frown.gif so i currently have one rigged like this;

a quick google found me this spec sheet (www.nmbtc.com/pdf/dcfans/4715kl.pdf) and i was like drool.gif my problem, is that they arent pushing the air they're supposed to. The -04w-B3x's are rated 2950rpm, 108CFM@42.5 dB, yet they're just whispering along right now.

firstly, can anyone tell me what i need to be able to add a molex connector or something to it, instead of pushing the wires into a connector? tongue.gif

and secondly, can anyone explain why they aren't pushing the air it should? thinking.gif im expecting a VROOM and the fan to take off across the room biggrin.gif
Note; removing/inserting the brown wire definitely changes the fans speed but not by much and the motor stays quiet, white wire does nothing

Thanks
JDC

I'm pretty sure white is the sensor wire normally, the fans I've used had red for 12V and black for ground. Your fourth wire is possibly for PWM control.
I'm about 90% sure you've got it wired for 5V which would explain why it's slow but I'm hesitant to say for sure until someone else confirms. If I'm right you only need the red and black wire connected to the yellow and black in the molex connector for full speed.
Hopefully someone else chimes in, like I say I'm pretty sure but I don't like giving advice on wiring in case it causes someone's stuff any harm.

Edit: To add a molex connector to it you need a couple of molex pins and a plastic connector to attach the pins to. Probably need a crimping tool too.

Oh and if I'm right you connected the PWM and Sensor wires to the PSU which is probably a bad thing. Mightn't cause harm but I'd say take them out anyway.
First, disconnect the wires other than the red and black. If it still spins then the red and black are the ones you need to connect to the 12V and ground wires in the molex connector.

If you ever bought a gpu (who has not?) then you have what you need in the box of goodies that came with it.The molex to 6 pin (typicaly to power a gpu) can have the molex side cut off(leave all the wire you can).Plug the molex into the coresponding part on the power supply and the butt connector the wires to the motor. This is a perfect time to cause a short (something you do not want to do) if you do this with the power on.

You are correct in the PSU's case.
The red wire from the fan side is usually the 12V wire and the black is ground. It doesn't go red to red with a PSU molex connector normally because the 12V wire in a PSU molex connector is the yellow one.

Ah i see.

I have always wired red wire from fan to yellow on molex. smile.gif

Yeah, i had it running 5v, silly me... i just tried it like this
Blank
Brown
Black
Red

and it worked, WHOOSH biggrin.gif does that wire it to MOLEX? is there anyway i can wire it to PWM? smile.gif

Edit: Sparks and crackling, my psu just died rolleyes.gif strange luck today, I thought it broke this morning (my 7950 popped and I thought the psu went with it) and replaced it with a new one, so the one that broke was the spare that I'd replaced, sat outside my pc! stupid no name psu...

To wire it to a PWM header I'm pretty sure you wire it like this:
P1: Black
P2: Red
P3: White
P4: Brown

I say this because I had an old fan that used white red and black wires. White was the RPM sensor, red 12V and black ground. I'm assuming your fan's wiring uses the same colour code and the extra wire is a PWM signal wire.

There is some information about different fan header pinouts here. It's where I got that picture. It's about something else but it has the pinout for a PWM fan header which is all you need.

Edit: About your PSU dying, did you say you connected all of the fan wires to the molex? You were meant to disconnect the brown and white wire and leave them disconnected because they're not meant to be connected to the PSU. The red and black were all you needed.

I Used the Red and Black, but it still ran at low speeds, popped the brown in and it went up to full speed. I think i nudged the wires and they shorted it, blame my stupidity please, and not anyone's advice thumb.gif

Oh, right. Well I think you just connected the brown wire to ground after rereading your post so you were probably right to do that part anyway if it brought the fan up to full speed.

Sorry to hear about the PSU, things like that happen sometimes. frown.gif
I had a short once with an LED I rigged up on the end of a wire, I got lucky because it tripped the overcurrent protection on my PSU and I got away with it but I've definitely done that before.
All you can do is learn what you can from it and doublecheck to make sure nothing can short next time. arrowheadsmiley.png
