So, I buy Skyrim, have it shipped overseas. I put the disc in and voila, Steam pops up to download the game. I promptly cancel that and install from the disc. But wait, I >have< to install updates before I can launch the game and be able to use the offline mode.
Does anybody know how much time it takes to download ~800MB on a JPI Worldwide connection in Logar province? Yeah, thought not.
On the other hand, same method for BF3. I could cancel the updates on Origin and proceed to play the SP campaign. Good enough.
My point being, I don't like either of them as a form of DRM. Not to praise them olden days, but buying a game disc meant you could actually play the game without jumping through fiery hoops.
Oh and when at home I don't really give a damn about either of them, I just tolerate them, but boy do you learn to hate stuff when excluded from civilization.
