Is it worth a dedicated boinc rig?

Thread Starter
Im new to this and want to know if its worth building a little rig ~$400 that could crunch 24/7 instead of my main that I game on which will end up going about 14hrs? I was looking at newegg I could get a AMD A4,mb,ram,psu,case for ~$250 then pick up a used gpu from the OCN marketplace. Ive wanted to do F@H but BOINC seems easier to use so Im doing this instead.

Creating a dedicated 24/7 BOINC rig usually ends up earning more points over the long run than faster hardware that runs occasionally. Even when running BOINC 24/7 on your main computer, you will be ultimately losing points because of gaming, encoding, web browsing, movie watching, and restarting for updates.

Before you purchase new hardware, take a look at the projects and decide which you want to run. Different projects run better on Nvidia than AMD and vise-versa. Also, there are numerous projects that are CPU only. These don't provide a lot of points, but are generally more medical (better humanity) type projects.

Dedicated GPU Crunching Rig Recommendations = Cheaper CPU (can save money here), Stronger PSU and multiple PCI-E slot Motherboard to allow multi-gpu upgrade, AMD or Nvidia GPU based on favorite projects

Dedicated CPU Crunching Rig Recommendations = unlocked i5 or i7 process, Strong CPU cooler, average PSU, average GPU or onboard GPU, Motherboard that can handle overclocking

I'd say yes, build one, I have a GTX 480 and a HD 5870 in mine, so with a 4C/8T CPU I can run any project !

Try and find a Mo-Bo that spaces at least 2 - 16x PCI-E slots more than two slots apart to aid cooling.
( No mATX ! ).

Like you suggest most of my "kit" is 2nd hand as we pay far more here in the UK.

Good luck !

Check out my "Budget BOINCer" build. A pretty beastly system, for about $1000 AND fully water cooled! The CPU, mobo and all three 5870s were purchased here on OCN. The power supply, memory, case, radiators and fans were bought new. The HDD, pump and other misc parts I had laying around.

For $500 you are going to have to go used. I just bought an old Dell workstation with dual Xeons for $200. It isn't going to win any records in the CPU projects, but with 8 physical cores, it will get some work done, I upgraded the memory for $40 and I am adding a used GTX 580 for about $250. That will do a lot of Boincing for $500.
