What do you mean? The top chips keep getting better and more competitive, and you can still overvolt the hell out of the 7970s.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

He has bought the 3970X for personal use and is pairing it with a Rampage IV Extreme.
He claims to not have time to test it yet, but I can keep pestering him to get a move on and post some results.
I got a happy text from another shopowner last week, where he proudly proclaimed that they had this new chip.
To me though.. It makes little sense.
I'll see what I can do about getting the guy to get it up and running.rolleyes.gif

Do you mind asking him where he got it? I'm fiending after one at the moment.

Seriously, just get a 3930k and spend the rest of your money on things that actually matter.
They are being sold in all hardware stores in a place called Sim Lim Square here in Singapore.

I have lived here for 15 years and I have built close friendships with the shopkeepers.

Are they not on sale where you live?

http://fuwell.com.sg/ shows it on the pricelist dated 3/11/2012

There isn't really online retailers that cater to Singapore, so most hardware is bought at the stores conveniently located across 6 floors in one mall.

But I do agree with Art Vanelay.. 3930K seems the way to go. From a financial point of view, anyway.

Silly Intel is silly. Just let me clock my damn chips to 4.5 already redface.gif

For real. It's like Intel has given up on the enthusiast and just wants to make laptop chips and server parts and very little in between :/

Yup sad-smiley-002.gif

November 16th according to this site:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20121105220801_Intel_Sets_Launch_Date_for_New_Core_i7_Extreme_Processor.html

Very interested to see if this chip overclocks better as in lower voltage, higher clocks compared to the 3960x.

I wanted to jump in here even though the post is a week old.

I just got a 3970x for almost nothing... and got it installed and running last night.

Benching it still about a week away, as I need to let the thermal paste settle and H20 loop work out bubbles.

Right now however, at a slight 4.7 GHz OC, im seeing CPU temps around 24-28C idle and ~40C after 30 minutes of moderate load.. whatever you want to take from that. Personally, I think the loop is doing all I could hope for a 150W CPU. Only LN2 or chilled water could pull the heat away faster.

Loop only contains a 4x120 XSPC rad, and a 1x140 Koolance rad.. the fan on koolance was only running at 650 rpm. Other fans 1350 rpm. I know this is overkill, but the rads were leftovers from a previous build. I plan on adding two 680s and a 2x140 rad at a later date.

Rampage IV Extreme

I'll post more information later if anyone seems curious.
