Eyefinity with ASUS Direct CUII 7970

Thread Starter
Hi. I have 3x HP 2311GT monitors and I am planning on getting an ASUS Direct CUII 7970 due to its Eyefinity support. My monitors have DVI, HDMI and VGA inputs and I know the 7970 has 2 DVI outputs so I will need to buy an DP>DVI or DVI>HDMI adapter.

My question is, what is the best way to do Eyefinity on these monitors without the use of an "ACTIVE" adapter? (These things are impossible to find where I live and I would really like to avoid international shipping.)

What country are you in?

Also, are you planning on gaming over eyefinity? With just one card you're not going to get great FPS.

I live in Kuwait and yes I'm planning to do some gaming. I've seen some decent frames on Eyefinity with 7970 GPUs so I guess that won't be much of an issue.

PS: Would an Apple Active DP>DVI adapter work or is it Apple exclusive?

DVI and HDMI are essentially the same thing with a different plug, so a passive adapter for that should work fine. Display Port to DVI will probably need an active adapter though.
You should be able to pick up a HDMI to DVI adapter for less than $5 (or local equivalent) from any decent PC shop or ebay.
Edit: sorry, assumed it would have a HDMI port on the card, It's surprising that it doesn't... you might want to consider a different model.

Depends on the game to be honest and what settings you have it at. If you turn off all the eye candy and stuff it could be possible.

As for the displayport. I don't think you have any other choice to be honest, the Active displayport is kind of the only way to connect a monitor unless you have a second card.

Thanks Comps. What about an Apple miniDP>DVI Active adapter?

:S

No idea on that one mate, apple are funny about using their kit on other tech so they've probably done something to it so it only works with an apple mac.

Thank you for bringing this into light. Then let's assume this approach:

DVI
DVI
HDMI>DVI Passive

Here's what I know so far:

AMD 5870 Reference - I have this card right now and DVI+DVI+HDMI does not work and it only detects 2 screens at a time. Assuming the above approach and the fact that DVI and HDMI are the same signal, then using a Passive HDMI>DVI to make a triple DVI arrangement will also not work. Correct? Is it because it is a 5xxx series card and it would actually work on a 7xxx card?

AMD 7970 Direct CUII - The only solution for this guy would be with an ACTIVE DP adapter. Alrighty then!

The 5xxx series only supports 3 monitors if one is on the Display Port, if you can find a 7970 with 2x DVI + 1x HDMI it would work with a passive adaptor (although on re-reading your OP you have HDMI in on your monitors anyway, so no adapter is needed).

With the 7970 Direct CUII you would need the Active adapter, I just bought one last week for my setup for $50, so they're not cheap (I can run 3 monitors without it, but HDMI doesn't support 120Hz).

If you're just running 60Hz @ 1920x1080 you might be able to get away with a cheaper non-USB powered DP -> DVI adapter (less bandwidth, only needs single-link DVI), but don't take my word for it.

edit: for reference the one I bought is the 'Bizlink XT625' I can confirm that it works flawlessly.
