Upgrade Recommendation/Question

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
Hey Everyone,

I am currently running a 6870 in my setup and am looking to upgrade. My question for you is what will give me the best bang for my buck. Am I better off buying a second 6870 and doing CrossFire (would require a second waterblock and new PSU), or am I better off selling my 6870 and getting a 7870 or 7950 (using universal waterblock so wouldn't need a new one)? Or is there a better route to take? Any suggestions are helpful.

With a second 6870 you would not need a new PSU as the 700W would be sufficient.

But, I'd recommend a 7950 upgrade.

It's not the wattage amount that is the issue, my PSU only has 2x6 pins, not 4x.

How much of a difference is there between the 7870 and the 7950? Enough to justify the extra $100?

Well yeah, in some games it means playing at max with over 30 fps or not; look here;

That chart led me to find other charts comparing the two. I've got a couple months before buying it so I'll be watching for the 7950 to go on sale. Thanks for the help/input.

I just switched from 2x 6870 in crossfire to a Sapphire 7950 OC'd to 1100/1500 (quite simply). The performance improvement is significant. I suggest you do NOT buy a second 6870, and instead get a 7000 series card with at LEAST 2gb VRAM
post #7 of 8
I actually upgraded from a HD6870 to a HD7870 recently (missed the free games giveaway >.>) and I'm slightly regretting it because in the game that I play the most (Dawn of War 2 Retribution) it's my i5-2500 that's bottlenecking me and I didn't really need any more GPU power. Having said that I would definitely recommend getting a new single card with 2GB+ of VRAM instead of getting a 2nd HD6870 so that you don't experience any issues later on.

^ THIS. HD 7950 will be clearly the better option. Sell your HD 6870 and get a HD 7950. HD 7950 (1.15 Ghz) is on par to slightly faster than HD 6950 CF. So you see its much better than HD 6870 CF. Also the DX11 architecture of HD 7900 cards is much superior than HD 6800 cards. So no point in investing in a last gen card. Also with a single HD 7950 GPU you avoid all the problems associated with multi GPU like micro stuttering, CF profile availability, and poor performance scaling in few games.
