Some thoughts from someone who has owned a HD 7970 and a GTX 680

First of all guys this thread is not being created to stir up trouble, I would just like to discuss some points from both sides from someone who has owned both cards and my intentions are not to slam ATI or Nvidia.

#1. The locked voltage debate, imo people are making to much of a deal about this in regards to AMD. Let me explain, I owned a HD 7970 back when they were first released and a friend of mine had 2 7950's. While it is nice that the voltage can be adjusted I dont really think this is giving AMD an advantage over Nvidia as far as overclocking is concerned, most HD 7970's will easily max out the ATI overclocking slider with no voltage adjustments. However if you desire to go further then you should be prepared to start dumping on the vcore because most HD 7970's will start to hit a wall around 1200mhz core and typically will not go farther than 1250mhz core even with maxed out voltage unless you are talking about the new Asus Card or perhaps the Lightning. My friends 7950's topped out at 1100mhz core with maxed voltage.

Nvidia on the other hand while being voltage locked has seen some amazing overclocks in spite of this weakness, many 680's floating around here and 670's will often break the 1300mhz barrier. My last card which was a Windforce GTX 680 would do 1350mhz core stable and my new Rig with SLI Windforce 670's will both break the 1300mhz barrier as well. How many ATI cards can stretch out that far on stock volts?

Now with that said I do believe AMD gains a bit more from an overclock than Nvidia as the scaling seems to be better but again this can be somewhat offset by the fact that Nvidia cars can hit some amazing overclocks despite being voltage locked.

Also something else I would like to find out about, I kept my HD 7970 up until the 12.8 cats were released which was a pretty nice performance driver and suddenly the benchmarks showed the HD 7970 pretty much even wth the GTX 680 in BF3. Now, having both cards I can tell you first hand that was not the case at all, perhaps in Single Player but not in Multiplayer. Especially on Gulf Of Oman where the HD 7970 had very inconsistent frame rates and would often be in the mid 40's depending on which part of the map I was standing in, particularly at the hotel.
The GTX 680 on the other hand was silky smooth eveywhere in Multiplayer including the Gulf of Oman and would rarely fall below 60fps at any given point.

This was at 1920X1080 with 4XMSAA all Ultra settings. The crappy Blurr Post AA was disabled.

What I would like to know with the cat 12.11's is if the BF3 issue has been fully resolved, I mean I know what the benchmarks show but again the last time I went off of that it was deceptive and didnt paint the entire Picture. Can someone with an HD 7970 card and the new 12.11's speak up in regards to BF3 Multiplayer using the same settings at the Gulf Of Oman map?

First off, what do you have for a processor? The 7970 should require more CPU power than the 680. On multiplayer, you might just be getting pushed into a bottleneck.

My new setup is a 3570K at 4.8ghz with SLI'd 670's at 1280mhz core and 7400mhz mem for gaming. thumb.gif

Odd. I've never encountered any dips below 60 on my friends 7970 build in Omen.

1920X1080 All Ultra 4XMSAA? Without MSAA it was as you are saying but with MSAA it was horrible. Does your friends rig have the new 12.11's?

Hmm, no one really seems interested? I thought for sure some HD 7970 owners would step up and give some info on this, oh well.

Beware. This could turn into a mud-slinging contest very quickly.

But anyway, I do appreciate your thoughts. It's nice to hear from someone who's been on both sides of the aisle so to speak.

I have tested HD 7970 a lot @ Gulf of Oman which i though was touch to run. I do use 2560x1440 but no MSAA. I pretty sure no matter what review sites say AMD cards did not do as well as Nvidia with MSAA ON. 1920*1080 with 4XMSAA GTX680 should do better. The cold hard truth is MSAA is e-peen and nothing more. It my eyes it makes the game look worse.

These days I tend to listen more to folks who have been on both sides of the fence rather than review sites because more times than not I have found them to be unreliable as you never really get the whole picture of how a game performs from card to card. I mean heck its nice and all if Card A gets higher peak frames than Card B but its also completely and utterly useless if Card A has constant High's and Low's which makes for an un smooth gaming experience.

Thanks for sharing the info and I also suspect that the 680 is still the better card in BF3 Multiplayer 1920X1080 With 4XMSAA enabled as well. As for the comment on MSAA making the game look worse I have to strongly disagree, MSAA gets rid of the ugly jaggies without Blurring the scenery the way the Post Processing AA does.

You sure your not confused with the two different methods of AA? because MSAA does nothing to change the scenery except for getting rid of jaggies, it doesnt blur the image but it does make it look a whole lot better.
