[CT] MPAA: Don't Let MegaUpload Users Access Their Data.

Quote:
The Motion Picture Association of America told a federal judge in Virginia today that any decision to allow users of the embattled file locker to access their own files could "compound the massive infringing conduct already at issue in this criminal litigation." MegaUpload's servers with approximately 25 petabytes of data are currently unplugged, offline, and in storage at Dulles, Va.-based Carpathia Hosting.

Last month, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key formally apologized to Kim Dotcom for the legally-dubious surveillance that police conducted against him. Since then, Dotcom has announced a new file-sharing site called Mega. If extradited to the United States, Dotcom faces criminal copyright infringement, wire fraud, money laundering, and racketeering charges.

So not only are they stopping people from accessing their LEGITIMATE files, but they're also stopping Kim from trying to put food in his kid's mouths.

I am more than curious how much the MPAA's legal fees are related to their income.

I also feel you missed a point that they are infringing on his freedom from another country of a crime that they haven't proven him guilty of with evidence that was basically stolen.

Really not surprised , the MPAA is a law unto themselves ,

This article was from January and sheds some light on just how corrupt they are.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/01/23/mpaa_bribery_petition_white_house/

Feel sorry for those affected who can´t get access to their legit files, They should all band together and sue these greedy scumbags into the ground .

The MPAA said today that while it takes no position on Goodwin's request to have his own copyrighted videos returned, it wants to participate in the hearing to describe "the overwhelming amount of infringement of the MPAA members' copyrighted work on MegaUpload."

Yeah, but surely the hearing is about letting users get their files back. So what the hell does the possible infringement of some of the files have to do with anything? This is about letting legit users get their files back, not putting the site back online.

The MPAA are just being idiots here. (idiots being the nicest word I can afford to say on OCN)

Kim probably should have thought about this before doing shady/borderline illegal/blatantly illegal things. He's not the one I feel sorry for at all, it's the legitimate users that I feel sorry for, like the videographer listed in the article, and people like him. I'm not saying that what happened to Dotcom is necessary right or wrong, but you should think about what you're doing and the consequences of your actions. The end user, using a system legitimately and legally, is the one who is really getting screwed over here...

I think the point here is the MPAA is acting like they are the law and the real governing bodies are just saying... 'ok, sure... why not. After all, you pay the bills'...

So basically, they're saying they want to be in on the process to make sure people are getting back material that actually belongs to them, and not a bunch of people getting all their pirated content back. How to go about doing that, I can't say. But I don't think their request is all that unreasonable, certainly doesn't seem like they're taking the law into their own hands because "they pay the bills". Instead, it seems they're participating in the legal process and are simply requesting to be present at the hearing, either to give solutions on how to give owner's their material back, or to make a case about just how much pirated materials was on megaupload, neither of which is against the law

Are you new to how the MPAA operates? This whole thing and the past decade or two have shown the MPAA and RIAA basically doing as they please and dictating THEIR views to the lawmakers and.... what a surprise, now the law reinforces their views so these fine upstanding organizations are just helping support the laws in place and improve them.
It's all political nonsense and gaming the system. Unless you're one to believe politicians and these mutli-millionaire industry heads are in it for the benefit of others and serving the public good... we aren't that naive are we?
The MPAA and RIAA have people working 24/7 to put positive spin on everything. Of course they want people to get their legitimate materials back. So long as the MPAA has a chance to review said material and make the determination themselves, or dictate to those doing the review what criteria to use.
"Hey man, it's not US doing it... it's them."
-"But you gave them the rules and guidelines on what to look for..."
"Well... it's still them doing it... don't look at us... "

My brother's told me about 94% of the files claimed to be "legitimate" do in fact infringe in some way or form one or more copyrights. His bosses are merely looking out for the good of the country through the prevention of such illegal methods. Does MPAA occasionally overstep their boundaries? Yes, but the employees have mouths to feed as well...they only do what the higher ups tell them to.

I *know* that OCN claims MegaUpload was legit, but I'm betting millions upon millions of files were illegal forms of movies/tv shows/books, etc. so they deserve to go and stay down. As for the people who want their files, sorry...but you should have chosen a better file host for your "legal" files.

Bravo MPAA! thumb.gif
