Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire HD

Guys and Girls,

How you doing, this is a rare thread where I ask a question because I can't actually find a simple answer, I'm getting my girlfriend a tablet for Christmas and I'm struggling on which one to pick.

I'm split between the Nexus 7 with the Nvidia Tegra chip or the Kindle Fire HD. She'll be playing games, reading books and browsing the interwebz. I've looked for a benchmark on google and can't find a simple answer that says this is better than that.

Anyone got any idea which one has the better chip in it?

BTW, if you recommend an iPad and I recommend that you shoot yourself in the face don't be offended biggrin.gif lol. (Don't you love how lol at the end of something like that means you get away with it biggrin.gif)

I'm open to other options though, the budget is around the £250 mark, I'd rather stick away from second hand though since it's a present for her and I'd like it to be perfect biggrin.gif. If it were me it wouldn't matter.

I'd go with the Nexus 7, since all I hear from review sites and those that own it (including my brother) is nothing but good things. I picture little old ladies that don't know any better with the Kindle.

Read this review and make up your own mind;

And the budget of £250 goes out the window, the nexus 10 is coming out at £400 for the 32gb version

I hate the iPad for that very reason, it's miles too expensive for what it is. I have a budget of £250 because I despise spending a silly amount of money on something that is essentially a fashion accessory. If it was for me then I would consider it because I love my gadgets and I would play games that would utilise the CPU and memory. But for the g/f who will be reading books and browsing Facebook, the power that drives that device would just be wasted.

I own a Nexus 7 and absolutely love it. I can't imagine going any other way. The speed of that Tegra 3 processor is amazing.

If your tv has access to Amazon Instant video then the Fire HD is a great choice

The thing is, the kindle fire has the 32GB of memory, she's been complaining that the HTC desire I gave her doesn't have enough, that's got a 16gb flash card in it.

Why not look at a different option?

If space is a factor, the Acer Iconia A110 is now out. It sells for $200 USD, has Tegra 3, HDMI out, and a Micro SD card. Even though it only comes with 8GB onboard, a 32GB Micro SD card is less than $20 currently.

I just bought and returned a Nexus 7. It's a fast performing device but I was underwhelmed by the screen contrast and color. My Samsung Tab 7.0+ and Toshiba AT270 7.7 both have much better color/contrast ratios.

If you can catch the Samsung Tab 7.0 on a deal it's good as well (although the Acer A110 is better in just about every way except battery life).

Have a look at the charts I created. Bear in mind the pricing is Canadian/USD.

32GB Nexus 7 is £199, same price as the Kindle Fire HD.

Add in the performance, screen resolution, and the fact that it will be running Android 4.2 before any of the devices in Robilar's list even get 4.1 and its a fairly easy choice to make.

N7 would be my choice. I don't even know if I would look at these 2 devices if I wanted mega storage.
