Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire HD - Page 3

Can you get your hands on the a110? I feel like you will change your mind after you see the display in real life.

I think that's what i'll have to do. Take a drive down to somewhere that has them both and check them out together.

That's a good idea. I bought a Nexus 7 and returned it after seeing what the color and contrast was like on the screen. The Acer A110 is now in stock so you might be able to catch one on display somewhere.

I have two 7" tablets (the Samsung and the Toshiba), one with 1024x600 resolution (same as the Acer) and the Toshiba with 1280x800. I didn't see any improvement with the Nexus. However, the Samsung is PLS TFT and the Toshiba is Super AMOLED+ while as another member above pointed out the Acer is a straight TN LCD panel. Personally viewing angles are not much of a factor on a 7" tablet as you usually hold it (sitting it in a stand on a desk is the other option but given it's size and weight I rarely set them down). But again it depends on how your lady friend wants to use it.

Here is how my Samsung is used (note the angle) when desk bound.

So what you're really saying is the viewing angle of the TN LCD panel doesn't really matter. So the Acer is still a good choice on £/Performance...

Is that right??

Personally yes. Viewing angles come into play when you cannot align the screen to your viewing requirements. A 350 gram 7" tablet is pretty easy to hold comfortably at whatever angle is best for viewing.

You're a star, I'm pretty shoddy with these sorts of things, It looks like I'm getting the acer in that case, the cost of £129 and the performance that comes with it is pretty hard for me to refuse. I will still pop in and check out the colour on each but I'm sure It'll be the acer biggrin.gif

Thanks again

TN viewing angles are only good in one direction though (typically landscape). I have a HAS monitor with a pretty high end TN panel and I can't even use it in portrait mode because the viewing angles are so poor one side of the screen is a different color than the other.

If the screen on the A110 is anything at all like the one on the A100 then its going to be disappointing. Moving your hand a fraction of an inch on that has a noticeable effect.

Even at £130 that's an incredible ripoff. The [Ainol Novo 7 Fire](http://android-sale.com/ainol-novo7-fire.html) is £30 cheaper, but with a much better screen and battery.

Haven't there been a number of cases of Ainol owners burning out the screens on their tablets?

ainol fire

This is Member @Carniflex get ainol fire tablet reviews :
1, Got mine today (it got stuck in customs but as it was under 150 euros then got away by paying only VAT of 20% on it). Seems pretty decent so far. No noticeable lag, plays youtube fine, etc. PDF text on A4 is a bit on the small side for reading from normal distance. Have one bright white stuck pixel and while its mildly annoying I can live with it for now - not feeling like trying to argue with customs again Mine has the older (QM) screen apparently based on the serial number. As its my very fist Android device then I'm a bit unsure about how to navigate around that thing so have not really done any indepth investigation inside. I did go over the "settings" tab tho - WiFi works fine and it seems it also supports Ethernet dongles (there is tab for these) and 3G dongles (you can even set data limits of GSM connection although the device has no built in GSM). Another interesting thing I noticed . it seems that the "internal" SD card is 16 GB out of which about 13 GB is free. I also plugged in 32 GB Class 10 microSD so I'm assuming there will be enough space inside for my purposes for now.

Now it remains to be seen if I can find any other use for it than pocket calendar / navigation device (bluetooth GPS dongle got stuck in customs as well today, plus one of the agencies claims that this thing is not safe to use in EU so I have some paperwork to do to get that one unstuck from customs;))

2, I can answer couple of these questions:
(1) The Tablet can be indeed charged through the micro USB port. I have not tried using it while its charging but if I plug in micro USB the screen starts showing the charging animation.
(2) I have not tested myself most of them, FAT32 seems to work fine (plugged in an 32 GB mSD card and it worked right away), as far as NTFS and ExFAT go according to the official forums it should support these as well, however, I have not tested the last two.
(3) DLNA support? - dont know - I'm using an Android device for the first day so if you tell me how I can try to look it up from the device.
(4) IR sensor - no, there is none visible externally and in the settings menu it's not referred either. (if you mean ambient light sensor then that one seems to be present as tablet can change screen brightness based on ambient light).
(5) NFC - umm probably not - I did not notice anything about it in the settings menu. I can try to look it up, however, if you tell me where to look.
(6) MHL support - seems like not present, at least in the settings there is no mention of it.

Edit: Upgraded to the latest official firmware which was surprisingly easy, just copied the files to the SD card, shot down, held power and volume minus down, then then tabled did something, restarted and I had the latest firmware (1031qm in my case), only issue was that it was all in Chinese But with some googling I found out how to switch back into english, the item in the settings right under the lock icon and then first row of hieroglyphs in the top in that menu. I did consider custom ROM's as well but it seems most have still issues in their "outstanding stuff" list which some functions I think I'll need, like bluetooth GPS support, etc. Anyway 1031 is already pretty decent, after switching to English there is very few places with chinese letters left.

I think the issue with "burning out screens" with ainol novo 7 fire/flame was related to the touchscreen controller which was getting somehow corrupted, there is now "unbrick tool" available in slatedroid and official ainol forums though which should help people to get their malfunctioning touchscreen fixed. It's also supposedly fixed in the latest firmwares (both custom and official) as far as I understand. The second issue that has been reported is a "mosqito sound" coming from the speakers if the backlight is at less than 100% settings - initially some people fixed it by soldering a larger capacitor inside the tablet, however a very recent patch has supposedly fixed this issue by increasing the display backlight frequency above the normal human hearing range.

Now I'm sure its not the most awesome tablet on Earth, but for the price I'm rather happy with it, even with my one dead pixel in the middle of the screen. Play store seems functioning for all the programs I need (google calendar, google maps, dropbox, teamviewer) - although I cant atm get teamviewer to connect to my desktop for some reason - I guess its the issue with resolutions, the tablet is 1280x800 but my dekstop resolution is 5400x1920 which might be above what teamviewer can handle - will have to poke around some more to figure out whats exactly the issue. I'm also a bit dissapointed that it seems there is no proper TrueCrypt client for Android, at least at first glance I did not spot any. I should be able to get my bluetooth GPS dongle later today (managed to convince Estonian Surveillance Authoroty that its not dangerous to human lives or health so they released it from custody yesterday) so I can test out how this thing plays along with Holux M-1000C dongle. I have also somewhere 3G dongle I'll be testing out later (although the prepaid data on the SIM card has ran out, but should be enough to see if the tablet can interact with it).

Another note is that with the first stock firmware the texts on the screen seemed a bit on the small side and according to some forum posts was that the tablet was reporting to the OP system that it's a 9.96'' device with 160ppi while in reality it's a 7'' device with 217 dpi, but it seems to have been addressed in the latest official firmware (from 31th Oct), lost some screen real estate but the texts are a bit larger now so dont have to look as close. Dont know if its normal for Android devices but sometimes it's hard to hit the right button on the touchscreen - note that its my first Android device and I have it like second day so have nothing to compare it to - I'm very much a PC guy spending majority of my day at my PC for both work and entertainment so I got that tablet just as a navigation device and a front end for the google calendar, which it sems to be doing rather well.

Overall I'm reasonably happy with it so far. Was 120 euros with shipping and customs managed to extort from me additional 24 euros for it (as it was under 150 euros then I got away by just paying 20% VAT on it without any additional toll charges). I ordered from the androidtabletbay and they did the usual stuff with customs declaration, i.e., it was noted as "gift" worth 40 dollars and the item type was on the package "media player" - I got stuck in customs probably just as a result of random cheking of packets which they tend to do in Estonia. If there is any question or something I can check out in the tablet let me know and I see if I can find the information smile.gif
