[Ars] Netherlands highways will glow in the dark starting in mid-2013

A smart road design that features glow-in-the-dark tarmac and illuminated weather indicators will be installed in the Netherlands from mid-2013.

"One day I was sitting in my car in the Netherlands, and I was amazed by these roads we spend millions on but no one seems to care what they look like and how they behave," the designer behind the concept, Daan Roosegaarde, told Wired.co.uk. "I started imagining this Route 66 of the future where technology jumps out of the computer screen and becomes part of us."

That's a really good idea actually. I imagine it can also be used to warm drivers of black ice.

umm... pun?

I too think this is a nifty idea. I don't see it practical for places like the US where billions of hours of combined road wear happen monthly requiring constant maintence. I would think in the end those snow flakes in the picture would end up just a mess of chaotic lines from all the re-paving.

Frankly I always thought we would see an in car enhanced image of the road, perhaps even with sensors from the road giving real time updates as the next best car tech.

Magical roads would be sweet though.

they can barely get simple construction completed under the decade mark. Maybe if they started now, my grandkids would be able to enjoy it, lol

Not with the current scheduling tongue.gif You would have 1 mile sections, separated by darkness and interrupted with re-paving every few months.

As already said about how slow construction can be. Would this even be worth looking at if Smart cars are truly just around the corner? Guess it would be a game of who could be adopted by the masses first lol.

how much glow? for people with sensative eyes who would need to wear some sort of glasses, this could have a completely negative effect. eye strain is a big issue with reflections already nevermind glow in the dark...

We can have this when they start building roads worth putting them on. In Ohio, Columbus specifically, roadbuilding is like the bottom of the priority list for Coleman and his band of idiots.

There's constant road construction, they're building awful highways out of concrete (They're really wavy and loud), and every road you drive on is cracked and warped due to trucks destroying them.

There's numerous roads on my way to work that are just rippled from trucks.

The reason we have to patch our roads so often is because the government outsources to the cheapest builder and regulations are weak. We wouldn't need such frequent repair if we used roads that were built on a cement base with 26 inches of tarmac made for the environment it'll be in.
