[Ars] Netherlands highways will glow in the dark starting in mid-2013 - Page 7

I don't know about this idea tbh. Wouldn't this paint just come off like all other road paint? and if that's the case how is it better then normal reflective paint?

seems like a lot of money when car technology can already tell us its cold outside, or the fact reflective road markers exist already.

Good use of tax payer money right there. That's exactly where I would want to invest it.

This would not be possible in my state. It takes them five years to replace a 1.5 mile stretch of four lane road. Not highway or interstate, just road.

I'd be happy if we could keep the potholes patched. I've been hitting the same (unavoidable) potholes for three years now.

Well with this the pot holes could at least glow in the dark.

I still don't know about this. I mean a yellow and while line that glows is fine, but I think this would be a distraction. Plus you know that here in the US there would advertisements made into the glow in the dark design

Sometimes they grind a little groove for the lines to sit in here so they arn't scraped off by the first snowplow of the winter. Must be more expensive or something though cause they don't do it much.

But yeah, I kinda can't see this working where I live. None of it would last past the first winter plowing.

Maby if it was impregnated into the asphalt during the road construction so the glowy snowflake that lights up at cold temperatures was part of the full thickness of the asphalt.

I dont think this would work with the road surfaces here where they do a normal road and then put a layer of pebbly rock on top. Much better gripping surface imho. I wish they'd use this type of surface everywhere instead of that smooth black surface you get with normal asphalt. Better visibility at night when it rains with this type of surface too, with a beige or light brown color instead of black. Though I guess they could paint on top of this surface if they plan to paint on top of asphalt anyways.
