I've had the 598's for over a year now. They're a great pair of cans and I'd definitely recommend them. Aesthetically, it's kind of a hit or miss for some people. Personally, I love the classy vintage look to them. The 595s are pretty much the exact same and cheaper as well, for an alternative.

Some people say that the bass is lacking and there is a bit too much of the highs, but I find that they cater to my musical interests fairly well. I listen to a lot of electronic(Vocal trance, house, etc) and a bit of everything else. The sound-stage is very good and live recordings sound spectacular through these. The first time my friend listened to the 598s, he thought he was actually at the concert (Flac rip of a John Mayer Live CD).

Obviously, with the 598s being an open-back headphone, there will be a lottt of sound leakage. I just use them at home, but I've seen more than 1 person with a pair of open-back Sennheisers walking around. The cord is also 9-10'...forgot how long exactly.

The only real, but very minute con, imho, about these is the cord is terminated with a 6.3mm jack. Sennheiser does include a 6.3mm to 3.5mm adapter, but I'd rather have it the other way around. Nothing I can't deal with though.

I think I will go with the Sennheiser 598s. I love the look, they have a great range, and even though they have a long cord I can see myself other places besides my house with them on. If they are the same price ($240) I'll most likely purchase them. then after that I think a soundcard and an amp will go along nicely. thumb.gif

Sounds good! biggrin.gif The 598's amp pretty nicely! I hope you'll enjoy them thumb.gif

If you still wanna look around some more, then you should also check out http://www.head-fi.org/products/category/over-ear as well to see if there are any other cans you may prefer. Some of them will be well above your price range (Audez'e LCD, Senn. hd800, Beyerdynamic Tesla T1 are all $1k+), but some popular cans that could be had in your price range are the Audio Technica(m50 and ad700), AKG k701/k702, Grados.

I like my HD25-1 II's better than I did the HD598's of mine that "disappeared". The HD25-1 II's don't quite sound as open, but they've got more punch and sound more fun.

OP, what kind of music do you listen to? What sources will you use for the headphones? Computer? Stereo? Sound card?

PS
I have heard and owned Grado Sr225i's. It is not a blind suggestion, mr pompous ass.

I finally made the jump and bought the Sennheiser HD598s, they sound absolutely amazing and I dont even have an amp or soundcard yet! The bass is perfect it kicks and sounds very clear. I've been downloading FLACs since most of my library is mp3s and aren't that great of quality. I'm extremely pleased with these for $250. Thanks everyone! thumb.gif
