Where is the pocket camcorder business going?

So, I am really confused as to why there has been literally NO updates to the pocket camcorder game lately.

I thought Kodak was coming out with a zi12 or something that was going to be pretty epic, and I know GoPro Hero3 is coming out (of which I would love to own a Black Edition for about 1/2 the price)....but why isn't anyone filling the void that Cisco and the Flip left?

I know that most smart phones are destroying the market, but I would like to see more investment into the 720p/120fps or 1080p/60fps communities.

Storage is the key issue with it.
Already have to buy a mini sd for the phone do you really want to buy another for the camcorder?
Like in my section of work. I would need alot dvdr mini. Which doesn't work.

Also Can you remember to grab it all the time or remember your phone?

I'm by no means letting this market die but the phone has alarming rate of user vs the camcorder.

Flip got bought out thats why you dont see them anymore.

you are not going to see 720p @ 120 fps in your pocket much less a cell phone for a little while longer much less 1080p at 60 fps either.

currently the only camera rumoured to have 1080p @ 120fps with decent quality is the sony a99.

the only other camera i know of that is currently capable of recording an image in that format that is worth anything is the FS100 that can do 1080 60p, the FS700 can do high speed 1080
up to 960 fps. the nex vg-10 can do 1080 60i as well.

so right now you are not seeing anything faster than 60fps in HD with a bitrate over 3000bps. if you want quality footage that has detail in it with fast framerate then expect to still pay a lot of money and it wont fit in your pocket yet.

eventually we will see faster speed pocket cameras. but as you said right now cell phones have eliminated the need for pocket camcorders. theres no need to update them when the companies that used to make pocket camcorders either also make phones or have updated the video mode on their P&S cameras. gone are the days of a dedicated pocket camcorder wink.gif

I think its a Go Pro Hero 3 for at least a few more years then eh? /annoying

Thanks man

go pro doesnt exactly fit in your pocket. so it doesnt qualify as a pocket camcorder, its a more specialty camera and not something you just walk around with on a regular day. wink.gif
