[ars]Windows 8, the post-PC world, and Linux: Microsoft will prevail

Quote:
Since the very first reveal of Windows 8, some critics have called the operating system a fatal move for Microsoft. They call it a blunder so large in its abandonment of Windows' heritage that it has created an opportunity for other operating systems to rise up and seize large portions of Windows' customer base in the consumer and enterprise markets. Others see Windows 8 as a sign that Microsoft is grasping for relevance in a world where Windows and the PC itself are waning. In this view, the once-mighty "Wintel" platform is already dead—it just doesn’t know it yet.

Both sets of critics are wrong—or, at best, only half right.

I agree with the author. I've used several flavors of Linux for months to years at a stretch, and I would hardly call myself a fan of MS in general, or Windows 8 in particular. I tried Win8 for about 2 months, and my eventual decision was that it wasn't for me.

With that said, MS isn't going anywhere, and Linux is not going to take over the desktop market. While Linux is fine for causal users, many of those users will prefer to stick with something more familiar if given the choice. Even though Win8 brings more obvious changes than previous releases, it's still Windows and it still behaves more or less like Windows. As far as corporate usage, going with a known commodity is always safer than an unknown. Businesses already have established IT/support routes, software licensing contracts, and employee training systems or requirements. For most businesses, this all centers on Microsoft and Microsoft compatible products.

I know that anything you can do in Windows can be done in Linux (unless it involves DirectX), but Linux takes a lot more investment than the "it's a free OS" crowd seem to realize. In short, the inertia of Microsoft's OS supremacy will be enough to keep them going for a long time.

I don't see the big thing about Linux. I have it install on a VMware and I see nothing about it except an alternative to windows.....an incomplete alternative that is

Did you even read the article? It address your very claim.

Windows piracy in China is rampant... People are willing to pirate Windows to obtain it rather than use the FOSS alternative that is Linux.

This negates anything else you claim. Most people don't want Linux on the desktop, period.

All I understood from this is "china"...

No structure to your thoughts. Not something I would've expected from somebody with as many comments as you
