[ars]Windows 8, the post-PC world, and Linux: Microsoft will prevail - Page 4

And that’s why Windows 8 is far from being a swan song; it's actually going to be a winner. It’s not revolutionary, it’s not entirely original, and it’s not exactly pretty. But it does give Microsoft a way to keep the PC in the game while playing to Windows’ biggest strength: the conservative nature of its installed base. Mark these words: in six years, Windows will still be dominating the personal computing world (Windows XP included).

I agree wholeheartedly with this. Is Windows 8 perfect? No. Does it work? For most, but not all people. But this is the big thing: It's a smart move by Microsoft. The writer did an excellent job of referencing past trends and using those to predict new ones. Top notch journalism by Ars here.

Your point about Microsoft lagging behind is 100% correct. That is generally what happens when a company gets too big and relies too heavily on normal customers for their income. But not all of Microsoft is like that as you can see the X-Box division is heavily profitable and pushes itself forward a lot.

For China going to Linux. Yes and no. We are seeing large Linux sales for PC's in China, but that is only because it's cheaper and they put pirated Windows on. We don't have an accurate user base but we do know that Linux is about 1.8% of WW usage so it's very small. While China will put out it's official Linux distribution soon, it will likely not do anything. Even with 40M users in China, Linux still won't matter. Look at the slow adoption rates of online banking in China. They only support Internet Explorer correctly and leave out Chrome and Firefox. People will be forced to use whatever the tools support.

As for their MIPS processors coming out soon. Sure. They are nice and will likely dominate low cost mobile options. But even in China, name brand sells. So unless Samsung and Apple switch over, it likely won't matter. Samsung is currently #1 in the smart phone market in China with Lenovo as #2. People want sexy. They want the name of Qualcomm and TI and other famous names. It's just like Intel Inside goes a lot longer with consumers than AMD. It's just the reality of the market.

I would not compare a paid OS against a free one.

Hmm. My thoughts are that Microsoft will still be the dominant member in 6 years but I get the feeling Linux is going to hold a larger share than it used to.

If Valve continue on their path of bringing steam and it's games to linux this could bring massive traction to it. Add to that the fact that valve have helped Nvidia bring out more stable drivers for Linux and suddenly it doesn't look too bad anymore. From what I've read about the performance gains of gaming on linxux I'm keen to give it a try.

Linux + Valve could = Windows killer. Not in the business world but in the consumer world. Ironically because windows have gotten rid of the start bar (and if people get used to that) they won't find linux all that bad or at least Ubuntu with unity.

This is a very interesting time in the computing world. Who knows maybe skynet is just around the corner tongue.gif
