piledriver with 1800 / 1866 memory

Thread Starter
Does the new piledriver chip make more use of faster memory?

Would I see any performance increase going from 1600mhz to 1866 mhz?

This is a question for which I would also very much like to hear an answer. I'm getting an FX-8320 or FX-8350 and putting it on my new Asus M5A99FX Pro 2.0 motherboard.

My question is, how sensitive is Vishera to memory speeds above 1600MHz and CL latencies? Are we talking 1 or 2 percentage points between DDR3-1600 and DDR3-2100 memory speeds or is Vishera more sensitive to variations in memory speeds for things like games/transcoding?

I can get a matched pair of 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair Vengeance LP DDR3 memory sticks, with a CL10 (10-10-10-27) rating for $85. How much worse would performance in games be with this ram vs. 1866 CL9 or CL10 memory? I can also buy a couple of AMD Performance Edition sticks (2x4GB) rated at DDR3 1600 CL8. Would I be better off with 4 of these or a pair of 8GB 1866 CL9 or CL10 rating?

Thanks very much in advance!

My 8150 has a ~ 1.0point difference from switching to CL9 1600, to CL10 2133 when clocked at 4.8Ghz in Cinebench 11.5

7.5 -> 8.4 give or take. The 2133Mhz ram wasn't mine and I was just testing it so I don't have anything more in-depth.

The only difference in gaming that you will notice will be slightly higher "lowest" frame rates.

I'm currently running CL7 @ 1600Mhz and I get 8.0.

For transcoding, faster ram is worth it. Absolutely. Could potentially save you hours.

For gaming, no.

Thanks for the reply.

I just can't seem to figure out how to balance capacity (I'd like to buy 2x8GB rather than filling my 4 slots with 4x4GB) with clock rate (I'm leaning to towards 1866MHz memory minimum) and latency (I want to draw the line at 1866MHz CL9, but I can't find 2x8GB for any less than ~$150 on sale here in Ottawa, Canada - don't want to wait for mail order, as I should really test this motherboard to see if it's working within the 15 day return period).

Anyhow, I'll probably just grab a couple of 4GB 1866CL9s and wait for the information to slowly filter in about the absolute best MHz vs. CL for Vishera and grab whatever's best later.

Remember when I was in Calgary there was only 1 decent computer shop there memoryexpress. Canada's a bit annoying for pc parts

I wish there was a Memory Express here in Ottawa! They only have stores in Western Canada - nothing east of Winnipeg. Here in Ontario, Canada Computers is the only enthusiast-level retail store you can get. I'm lucky there's 4 of them in Ottawa, but still, they don't always carry everything. They don't have Samsung Magic ram, for example:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147096&Tpk=MV-3V4G3D%2fUS

In case you don't know about Magic ram, here's a link:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1284947/any-amd-users-with-high-stable-samsung-ram-overclocks/10

I'd buy these in a heartbeat if only they had them!
