[Case Mod/Build log] THE SULACO - OCN ALIEN Evolution

Welcome! wink.gif

The name of this build is OCN ALIEN EVOLUTION----decided on that for several reasons:

1. I love that movie series and green case lighting
2. OCN has made all this possible for me to build and mod my computer so huge props to the site and I love the community! thumb.gif
3. The entire build has been a learning process and since the pc originally started in a cougar evolution I figured I'd include it in the name

I first built this Computer with the components in my sig rig in November 2011 and since then I have been hooked on PC news and developments and reading through OCN biggrin.gif Its been a great learning process and finally I feel like I have a PC worth showing off a little bit so I decided to share the evolution of this PC with yall and see what you guys think.

So without knowing it the inspiration for this build actually finally became apparent to me just a few days back. And this is it:

I have always been a huge fan of the "Alien" franchise and in addition to my love for green system lighting it finally clicked to me that the reason I love my 300R case so much is the sleek clean industrial look it has and that is also what appeals to me about the Alien franchise is the industrial clean look of all the technology presented in the first two movies of the series.

So this was what inspired the build name "OCN ALIEN EVOLUTION" and the name plate I made for the inside of the case.

I also have really enjoyed my AMD CPU and GPU and really like the AMD company and so I decided to also give them some add space within the case in the form of a custom fan grill I made to go over a GPU blower fan I made. I only installed this fan so I could put the backlit grill over it smile.gif I had the idea and so I decided to add it

The Evolution of this PC since first build has been the following (happened over the course of the past year)

1. Build November 2011 in Cougar evolution case
2. installed fan controller
3. changed out fans
4. re-wired (cleaned up) several times
5. Added storage drives

since September 2012:

6. Decided to transfer to a new case, the 300R!
7. Rebuilt the PC in new case
8. Bought and installed NZXT HUE
9. Got the idea to start modding the internal aesthetic tongue.gif
10. built the psu shroud/ cover with fan
11. added fan shroud and plexi over the middle front blank area in 300R
12. made custom fan grill for the 80mm gpu fan, then mounted both into case
13. made corsair front case badge from plexi, then attached it ( actually didnt know I was gonna use it ont he front until I discovered the front had screws spaced perfectly for it)
14. Really wanted to have a backlit OCN symbol in the case, and looking through my plexi scrap I was also struck with the idea to make a name plate for the case and also realized kind of the inspiration for the build.
15. Made the name plate from plexi with stenciled graphics on it, then instlaled on the psu shroud

****THIS POST---is a history of posts I've made in relation to this build which catalogs it a bit as I went through each step.****

I havent't gotten to do any MODs to my 300R case yet, but here are some of the ideas I have for the future (money permitting as I am in college currently):

1. Watercooling-- I would likely use 2x alphacool single 120mm monsta 80 mm thick radiators
One in the front, one on the rear exhaust along with an alphacool cpu block a bay or cylinder res. with a swiftech 655b pump. I like green and blue as colors so either one may be used in the color scheme

2. Vinyl wrapping the case exterior and parts of the interior
3. Replace my window that has fan grills in it with a solid smoked acrylic window
4. Create a shroud from black plexi wrapped in vinyl for the power supply and part of the res. (if a cylinder and the pump)
5. Add some black mnpctech handles to the top for easier portability (i travel home a decent bit, and the machine has to come with me of course wink.gif

***I'm a big fan of the c70 case as well as the 300R. I agree some of the above mention mods may be easier in that case, I like the smaller form factor, exteriro look, and price point of the 300R better for now so that is the case I'm looking forward to complete these MODS on smile.gif

So here are some pictures of my build in the 300R as it currently sits:

UPDATED: 10/25/12

new clear FULL window! and a false floor/psu shroud with fan.... more pics below

Finally got an extension cable for my 8 pin motherboard power cable so I could run it behind the motherboard! So goodbye to that ruining the inside look of my case!

I used a rosewill 10" extension from newegg. Its working well thus far and was pretty easy to install although slightly stiff. I got a matching one for my 24 pin extension as well but I'm really not happy with it, it was insanely stiff and thus not long enough to run behind the board and hide the multicolor cable so I ended up not using it frown.gif but I did buy an NZXT HUE led light kit just a few minutes ago so hopefully this week my case will be basking in the glow of awesome new lights thumb.gif

I finally got my NZXT HUE from newegg and got it installed in my 300R. Since its purely a visually upgrade I'll include a good bit of pictures below.

Ill also include a simple diagram as to how i ran the whole strip of LEDs around the case for others to see if they want to do it similarly. I have seen pictures of others running of the strip and felt that more light could be made within the case by running it around the roof as i did, and I feel it gave a lot more light in the case to all the components.

In securing the LED strip to the case i did not use the 3m sticky strip on the back. I used zip (quick) ties to secure it to the front, back, and roof ( they are not very noticeable, and my case is elevated so I don't ever look at the roof).

Blue (above)

White (looks light green because of camera i guess)

Green

Aqua blue (light blue)

Front of the case with the HUE installed, it has brushed aluminum plastic look which fits very well with the front of the 300R which has the same type of look

Inside the top and bottom with the White LED on (shows the most details and brightness)

Inside with Aqua blue ( my favorite actually)

Inside with Green color on ( it matches my front green fans very well, wish i didn't have the blue side fans)

Aqua is my favorite color because it matches the side fans well enough and it seems to provide a bunch of brightness of light then just the straight Blue)

Maybe at some point i'll switch out the side fans so that it is less of a clash of colors (although i kind of like it haha)

Overall I'm highly satisfied with my experience with this great product and I'm very happy that I got it because it gives so many options as opposed to a regular LED strip. I have changing tastes sometimes and this is an ALL in one product that puts a great look into your pc case.

Sorry for so many pics but I figured I'd be as thorough as possible to let others see how the case maight look if they wanted to buy their own nzxt Hue.

What do y'all think?

I've got another rig update for my 300R

I was inspired by nhusters mod to his case with the false floor/ psu shroud (found above). I also had finally had enough of having the side fans block the inside of my case so I decided to put my modding hat on yesterday and do some things to my case.

I wanted to make a full view window and also strengthen the door a bit, so i decide to use 1/4" plexi. And after finally installing it I can honestly say the door is ROCK SOLID now and super sturdy.

I also wanted to use black mirrored plexi for the shroud but both home depot and lowes don't carry small sheets anymore (used to locally). So i decided that I would go ahead and try it any way with he scrap clear plexi I had. It all turned out pretty well I think, the shroud being much easier than i thought and a much cleaner dremel job ( after the door which was first lol). Now I know that the point of a false floor is maybe to hide things like cabling but after instlaling it i kind of like having the fan hovering in my case and lighting a few things up at the bottom.

So any way the pics are below, let me know what yall think and any suggestions? I am currently considering placing a few decals on the shroud? thoughts on which ones I should use? ( I think it would be cool because the symbols would be back lit

Thanks for comments thumb.gif

Before the mod

AFTER

Window, notice the cuts are a bit rough....this is my first serious use of a dremel to cut into something, could be cleaner but turned out ok

workbench lol

paintball mask....eye protection and for the face as cutting wheels fly apart lol

Ok so I had some extra plexi glass from the first mod and decided to do a few other things lol....

1. I shrouded the section above the drive bay cage and make the attached secondary fan look like it wasn't just slapped into the case.
2. I took an old antec green 80mm fan and decided to make a custom plexi AMD backlit symbol. I ended up mounting it just below the video card to feed it more air to its fan and over its heat pipes directly (it dropped temps 2 degrees smile.gif

I used my one speed dremel again to do both new mods. Once I had cut the small piece for the AMD symbol I sand papered the clear finish off and then spray painted it matte black. My lines could have been slightly more straight but between the jagged lines and the matte black dimpled paint job I think it kind of has a monster energy look to it maybe?

Anyway let me know what yall think?

So in my modding madness the last few days I had one final piece of plexi scrap and an idea....its far from prefect but for a first attempt i think it came out decently smile.gif

just thought I'd share with you guys.

made for a 140mm fan. Don't know where to put it in my case (getting crowded last few days lol) I thought about putting t in the front over one of the fans but the green doesnt look very good back lighting it

well I found a spot biggrin.gif turns out the front asthetic screws are the same spacing as a 140 mm fan and fit my pre drilled holes I made in the corsair logo cut out. i don't know if I will leave it on the front. but for now i like the backlight effect and having a much larger case badge on the front tongue.gif

Making the name plate:

steps:

first sand the gloss finish off the plexi which makes it look frosted, then

1. get pictures and sized them in word using ruler relative to the size of my plexi piece
2. print them and decided on placement
3. use blue painters tape to mask off the plexi
4. attach the pics and then cut out the lines and remove the inner pieces of painters tape (leaving a stencil for painting)
5. Spray paint one side in galvenized gray compound, other side in black high performance enamel (both rustoleum)

pics below:

AFTER painting

had to remove all the other parts to then install the name plate, glad I made things kind of modular! Worth it!

of course what movie do you think I'd watch while brainstorming this name plate...tongue.gif

my next Idea is to make a back plate for my graphics card and either wrap it in carbon fiber and possibly also wrap the gpu shroud in carbon fiber sheets so then the gpu aesthetic will be completely changed smile.gif any other ideas of things I can do to the graphics card or the build in general? Im still looking to add to the look of this build and any help is appreciate!

UPDATE 11/5/12

well I finally decided I;d had enough of looking at the HIS color scheme on my HD 6950. So I went to the auto store and grabbed some carbon fiber vinyl....I really wish they had 3m di-noc because the stuff I got felt difficult to work with to say the least because it was on some very thick rolled kodak picture paper.

Anyway I decided to wrap as much as i could of the graphics card to change its look

BEFORE

AFTER

I think it looks better! and I also made a quick backplate for it from thick cardboard wrapped in carbon fiber which is only temporary to check how it looks in the pc and goes with the other things

Other I ideas I've had in the las few days include the following

the real backplate made from thin plexi, painted and wrapped in carbon fiber

This will likely be placed near the fron on the vertical plexi area after painting

Could you tell me what case fans you are using that give you such a nice green color? I wonder if it's just how the camera photographs them, but the green appears blue-tinted, like more of a teal-ish green than a plain yellow-green--is that true?
