Just installed my Asus HD 7970.. no display? :(

Okay so this is the first time I do any sort of PC building/customization.

Current PSU: CoolerMaster Real Power M520, 520Watt
Current Motherboard: Intel DX58SO
Current Processor: Intel Core i7 960
Old GPU: HD 5870
New GPU: HD 7970

When I install the new 7970 I don't get any display. Not sure when I should hear this but I never heard the computer make a 'Beep' sound (is this called 'post'?).

I uninstalled all my drivers following this guide: http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2012/4/4/guide-how-to-completely-uninstall-amd-graphics-drivers.aspx

  • The fans and the lights of the GPU are working.
  • I tried DVI as well as HDMI.
  • Like I said, I uninstalled the drivers.
  • Using my old 5870 now while typing this, so that's still working.
  • I went into BIOS and everything seems pretty normal I guess..

So I think it could be one of the following:

So should I buy a new PSU? If so which one? Could anyone recommend me one from informatique.nl or azerty?

When you say you tried DVI and HDMI, do you mean you changed the cable you are using? Or did you change the monitors input setting? Because most monitors have a button that will shift between VGA / DVI / HDMI inputs just like your TV has input1, input2, etc.

Find this button and make sure your monitor is set to the same input you are using.

OP you have two 8 pin PCI-E power connectors on the card. your power supply does not have two 8 pin PCI-E power connectors . how did you connect the two 8 pin PCI-E power connectors.

I put the two 6 pins in the 7970´s 8 pin ports. So there a few pins not used in the card. Is that the problem? Thought it might be.. that's why I took the pics just in case.

The answer lies within the power cables. You NEED both 8 pins powered. otherwise the card wont work. There are 3 ways to do this. 1 is the PSU is setup with 2 8 pin or 2/4 pin or a 4/4 pin setup x2. If you don't have a PSU that is capable of doing this. Then you need the 4 pin molex to 8 pin pci adapter. Which should have come in the box too. IF thats not in the box. OFF to any electronic store other then best buy. AND if the PSU cant handle the power across the Molex 4pins.............Time to get a different PSU.

But clear answer is that the card isn't getting the required power.

definitely. first connect two 8 pin PCI-E power connectors. also as i told earlier your psu supplies only 408w on +12V rails. not good for a high end core i7 based system with a HD 7970. get a new PSU. the rosewill capstone 550M is available for 70 bucks. an amazing price given its very high quality. has 2 8 pin (6+2) PCI-E power connectors

Thanks guys! Really glad I asked you people before paying someone to take a look at it etc.

Now I'll buy a PSU with 100% confidence. I'm guessing the 8 pin power cables should be included when I buy one, right?

I live in NL and I don't have a credit card so I need to find a PSU on azerty.nl or informatique.nl.. or something else.
