Just because it has 50% more cores. It doesn't mean its going to be 50% faster. Would love a 4.6-4.8ghz 3930K vs 3770K comparo

I thought that I'd throw this in here:

From CPU World:
Quote:
Ivy Bridge-E (IVB-E) is a variation of Ivy Bridge-EP core. The "-E" processors will inherit some "-EP" enhancements, but not all of them. First and foremost, the number of cores on Ivy Bridge-E parts will be maxed out at 6. This is disappointing if we take into account that "-EP" server CPUs will have 10, or may be even 12 cores (still unconfirmed). Each core on extreme microprocessors will have up to 2.5 MB of level 3 cache, therefore the maximum size of L3 cache (15 MB) won't change from Sandy Bridge-E. 6-core IVB-E models will have 130 Watt TDP. There will be also quad-core parts with 130 Watt TDP. The CPUs will have all Ivy Bridge technologies enabled, with the exception of Trusted Execution. New features on Ivy Bridge-E will be Float 16 instructions, and support for PCI Express 3.0 interface. Besides 40 lanes of PCI-E 3.0, the chips will have 4 lanes of DMI 2.0/PCI-E 2.0 interface.

Integrated quad-channel memory controller will have a few improvements too. The maximum memory data rate will be increased to 1866 MHz, and the maximum memory size will be increased as well. Although the controller will still be limited to 1 DIMM per memory channel, it will add support for DDR3 DIMMs with 8 Gb memory, whereas SNB-E could work with 4Gb DIMMs at maximum. Furthermore, the controller will also support 4 ranks per DIMM, as opposed to 2 ranks for Sandy Bridge-E parts.

So, IB-E will have 36 PCI-e 3.0 lanes?

With the size of LGA 2011 chips, I doubt that IB-E will have the thermal density problems that IB has, and that should allow for slightly more oc'ing headroom. I wouldn't doubt that the performance increase from SB to IB will be the same increase for SB-E to IB-E too. If Haswell is indeed a ~10% increase in performance over IB, then IB-E should perform very well since the 3820 closely matches the performance of the 3770K.

I might pick up X79 since my rig is dead (power surge blew psu and blew out my mobo's capacitors). 3820 (replace with 4820 when it comes out)+16GB samsung ram+ASRock X79 Professional should last me a while.

Doesn't matter if a 3770K is or isn't faster than a 3930K. Z77 doesn't have enough PCIe 3.0 lanes for any true enthusiast build (3-4 Way SLI, triple monitor set-up) so it's irrelevant. For those of us that run more than one GPU and one monitor X79 is needed and so is its refresh.

I just hope 6 cores aren't for all the CPUs and the higher end CPUs sport 8. For the entry level I would expect 6 like with the 3820 and it's 4 core design. Who knows. Will have to wait and see.

How many times do I have to say Ivy Bridge-E is NOT the same as Ivy Bridge. Ivy Bridge-E is a native 12 Core processor that will be on LGA 2011...

It's going to be close to 50% faster in highly threaded applications, if I didn't make multithreaded clear enough to you.

yeah keep living in your fantasy world buddy. X79 has its perks, and just because you dont do anything that would utilize X79 dosent mean its useless. I for one am glad i have a X79 chipset. I have more expandability for graphics cards due to having a lot more slots that can do PCIe 3.0, more ram expandability, and more CPU cores. I've maxed out my CPU to 100% many times and still can run photoshop cs5 without lagging at all.

if there is an 8c 16t consumer level i7 for X79, i will be purchasing it.

I just hope 6 cores aren't for all the CPUs and the higher end CPUs sport 8. For the entry level I would expect 6 like with the 3820 and it's 4 core design. Who knows. Will have to wait and see.

Enthusiast build? 4 way SLI/Xfire scale like crap and Z77 board with a PLX chip can easily handle 3 way.

Ivy bridge E is the SAME architecture as Ivy Bridge. How many times do we have to tell you that. According to this article you're not even going to get 8 core chips let alone 10 so someone remind me again why i would even consider 2011?
