Its not as good as Intel (not far behind through) but the 6-Core has great bang/buck ratio, would be a good buy for sure. thumb.gif

For the price you could get a core i5 gaming PC.

core i5 3330 (3.0 Ghz) CPU - 180
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116781

ASROCK H77 motherboard - 65
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157303

Corsair 8GB DDR3 1600 - 36 ( with $5 off w/ promo code EMCJJNJ42, ends 11/7 )
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145345

Rosewill CAPSTONE-550-M PSU - 70
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182262

XFX HD 7870 - 230 (210 after mail in rebate)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150605

TOTAL 581 (561 after mail in rebate)

if you can spend close to 600 bucks more get the Gigabyte HD 7870 OC. the windforce cooler 3x is one of the very best . can easily keep temps below 60c even while the chip is running at 1.2 Ghz.

For gaming ivybridge core i5 3330 (3 Ghz) is going to be faster than FX Vishera at 4 Ghz. you can see the sandybridge core i5 2400 (3.1 Ghz) beating the FX-8350 (4 Ghz) . the ivy core i5 3330 will match the sandy core i5 2400.

Hi Sammickk,

AMD chips "seem" cheaper but I assure you, there is no CPU in the market right now that can hide from the onslaught of information that is available to consumers through simple web searches these days. There's a reason the FX 4 and 6 core, as well as Trinity chips, are priced down with i3 class stuff. Truth is, the dual core, hyper-threaded i3 holds its own against the various quad and hex core AMD chips depending on the task at hand. The gaming performance of an i3-3220 will basically match that of an FX chip (doesn't matter how many cores) clocked to ~4.5-5GHZ in CPU bound games. Games don't take advantage of 8 core CPUs, so don't even waste time looking at that stuff for a gaming dedicated rig.

If your friend wants to overclock, the FX line of chips offers a lower buy-in point for overclock-able chips. Being overclock-able, does not necessarily make them a better value though so keep that in mind. An i3 Ivy will run comfortably on the cheapest 1155 socket MOBOs you can find, and matching that gaming performance with an FX chip will require a higher buy-in cost because the motherboard must have beefier VRMs and an aftermarket heatsink becomes a requirement. As far as gaming performance is concerned, it can be MORE expensive to achieve the same performance on an AMD build. The i3 Ivy and entry level i5 chips are excellent choices for gaming rigs.

Regards,
Eric

The FX-6300 will usually provide better value for your money in terms of giving you a consistent experience with enhanced multitasking ability, with system-wide costs and overclocking headroom (there is headroom on AMD's stock cooler) in mind, than a locked i5. If I weren't at a con right now I would elaborate on this. Also not sure if prices may have changed at some places.

My brothers gaming rig is only a sole Llano overclocked. He plays practically everything on it medium-high settings. Often 1080p but plays games really well at 720p. Considering a lot of games today are ports 720p sometimes on occasion looks better. I've been weening him off consoles slowly. By the way the performance of an APU graphics is dependent on the speed of the ram, the faster the better. Going from 1333mhz to 1866 is a 40% performance boost.
