[IGN] Report: PS4 Dev Kits Surface

The dev kits are apparently based on the AMD’s A10 APU series and come with either 8GB or 16GB of RAM, as well as the Blu-ray drive already mentioned and a 256GB hard drive as standard. This is to ensure that the console will be able to run 1080p60 games in 3D.

Seems interesting.

I still love the consoles for the ability to sprawl out on my couch and play them. A refresh should last quite a while now without too much of an issue.

Devs kits always have double the RAM of the retail machine so expect the actual consumer machine to have 4 or 8Gb of RAM.

1080p60 and 3D? Yes, Sony said PS3 would do all games at native 1080p.... we all know how that worked out..

Oh man I think PS3 was a disaster of a design for a game console. I used to believe Sony's fud about its untapped power but I realized finally, there were full of crap. The PS3 was just a needlessly complicate mess I think. Multiplatform games in my experience always ran like crap on it. PS3 is hard to code for with no real benefit I think.

I guess developers spoke up about the difficulties of coding for Cell opposed to x86?
Perhaps this means we'll see more equal versions of games for 360 and PS3.

Can't wait to see how the A10 APU performs on the PS4.
I would guess the A10 based APU is a placeholder for a 28nm Steamroller based APU, with which the PS4 will supposedly launch.

It wouldn't surprise me if this placeholder APU has the GPU overclocked to 1 Ghz (it's capable of doing it), perhaps with a 125w TDP, in order to come closer to the real performance of the Steamroller APU. The CPU part may also be overclocked to achieve the same effect.

As to resolution, yes, I think it will probably be running newer games at 720p a few years after release and then drop to sub 720p just like the PS3 right now.

PS3 generally now runs multiplats with no difference and in some games it actually runs them better then 360

Its not hard to code for, RSX uses basic OpenGL which has been around forever and any one who programmed PS2's Emotion Engine would find Cell a doddle..

PS3's biggest problem for the first few years was memory, the OS take a good chunk of RAM but over the years Sony have reduced it and gave developers more memory.

At launch PS3's OS took 120mb of memory, now it only takes 50mb giving developers an extra 70mb to play with, that has made all the difference.

That's because ports are ports. Those devs. did not from a cost perspective utilize the PS3 fully. Yet we see games like Uncharted 2, Ratchet & Clank, God Of War 3, and Killzone 3 look fantastic, and as good and better as any title on the Xbox 360.
I think only Naughty Dog says there's yet-to-be-realized potential left in the PS3.

I'm still floored by how many tricks Dev's had up their sleeves to make current console titles look as good as they do.

Its exciting to finally hear about the next gen but with the effort MS just put into their latest dashboard update, they must plan on extending the 360's life cycle a little longer

Sounds pretty impressive for a console. Could play PC games adequately with that setup...
