I'm hoping that the PS4 will be powerful enough to emulate the PS2 at least, so I can put my PS2 into storage. Right now my original Xbox and PS2 are still in my house because there is nothing to replace them. And sadly if I get a WiiU I will need to keep my Wii out because it is the only thing I have to run my Gamecube games.
Considering what 6+ year old PS3s are selling for, I'd estimate the PS4 will be $400 for a base model. I'd estimate that the next Xbox will be around that price as well. Both will likely have $500 models as well, with more storage or extra controllers, etc...

PS2 emulation with these rumoured specs? Very, very, VERY unlikely. You'd have to think along the lines of PCSX2 since these specs are more x86 and PC compatible, making them technically better for emulation, but even then you need a beefy, high-clocked rig to run PCSX2 in HD resolution and render. Even with speedhacks and a i5-2500k at 4.5Ghz and a GTX 470 (my rig) i still get slowdowns. I guess you could do it with the Software Emulation mode that the PCSX2 sports and runs only off the CPU for rendering and running everything, meanwhile hardware mode is CPU/GPU co-operation (more so GPU).

Still, i think that'd be very hard to do.

How sweet would it be if they made the console come with just the A10, but had an expansion slot for a discrete GPU if the user wanted to spend the extra cash for either 1080p @ 60fps, or even maybe 4k! I simply don't understand why they don't make consoles expandable...

It would increase the life of any given platform, and it would allow devs the option to scale the graphics based on the hardware that particular user has installed.

This seems so straight-forward to me. I must be missing something.

Maybe the idea is to release the A10-only PS4 first and then offer an "update" down the road with a CF configuration for some extra $$...

Because games would be inconsistent. It'd be unfair for people with the extra graphics add-on that allows them to have better graphics than someone who doesn't have one because they have less money. It would be unfair. That's like giving them a PS3 with no PSU in the box "By the way, you have to buy the PSU seperate just to turn it on". No batteries included to the extreme. But yeah, it'd just be unfair on those cant afford to get it.

This is the good thing about Consoles. If one person has it, everyone else has the same hardware as you that makes the game play. If it sucks for one person, it sucks for everyone. The company wants consistency, not inconsistency.

Well with optimization and everything which consoles come with I'm guessing that they'd be able to emulate the PS2 at least, possibly not at 1080p but 720p as the bare minimum, were able to emulate the PS2 and as Sony the creators of It they should hopefully be able to do It better than we can possibly, but even then It may not be perfect as I believe the Xbox360 has trouble emulating some Xbox1 games but this time round were talking next generation systems so PS2 software emulation hopefully should come along quite well, resoltions of games may be a bit strange though such as Tekken games and a few games which have lines coming down the screen on PC at 1920x1080 but at 1080x1920 It's fine strangely enough.
But they might be able to fix these, not so sure about graphical glitches, Shadow of the Colossus has some strange borders on my version and emulating It is a pretty tough job, I could probably get it to run better but I like AA and 1080p sometimes more biggrin.gif

They haven't attempted major expansions since the 90s, this sort of thing is missed but I think gamers of today like simplicity and just want to pop in a disc and get going, while in the 90s and before that we were posed with many problems, do you remember blowing into that cartridge? I was too young then but I'm sure the majority of adult games remember these experiences, I heard a story where someone I knew had ot put the PS1 upside down to get It to play games hahaha!

That would be a big mistake on Sony's part, It would split the player base of games and users of the console in two!
Imagine if Uncharted 3 required a special box which contained a second GPU and you couldn't play the game without it. It would increase the size and the mass of It and would disrupt the simple nature of putting in a game and just playing it without additional requirements.

Such as ripping your PS1 disc, installing custom firmware (Not sure If this is required) and then putting it on your PSP or PS Vita somehow.
Would be nice to play that FF7 I saw lying around on my PSP.

Millions of people have brought It for their families and to have fun and yet there's still the Wii being pushes against the wall and being "bullied" by fan-boys for having "crap" graphics, It's the same thing which occured with the Nintendo DS, Nintendo push for innovation and having fun.
The same thing may happen to the Wii U when It gets released and I certainly have my eyes on that, I can't wait to see what Mario Kart and the next big Mario game will look, feel and play like on that system with the power which is concealed in that machine and the Wii U controller just pushes Innovation even further.
Don't get me started on Zelda, Skyward Sword is amazing in my opinion so where the previous games It's what kids should be playing and not no Call Of Duty, Saint's Row and Grand Theft Auto.

I had to physically modify my PS2-Slim because it could not read dual-layer DVD, while newer models could. Guess what. There are a few games out there (Rock-band 1 to give you an idea how low they were in the visual quality food chain) that use DL-DVD. Not to mention the original PS2 needing expansions for HDDs and Ethernet.

The N64 had a memory expansion pack because some games needed more to run at all.

Unfair, yes, unheard of/will not be done, no.
