Oh and if the PS3 was to be backwards compatible on the PS4, an emulator would show up on PC within a month of the PS4's release.

Yea I am (uneducatedly?) under the belief that the whole PS3 hack situation as it is will cause Sony to take measures that will inevitably make compatibility impossible for even them to pull off.

There's NO CPU in the PC world that could emulate cell at full speed, heck you would be lucky to get a PC CPU to do it at half speed.

He said that if they managed to make a PS3 emulator working on the PS4, then the emulator would be reverse engineered and distributed within a few weeks. That's a very big if, and one that is not likely to happen.

The first PS3s had PS2 hardware in it to be able to play PS2 games with it. The same thing would apply to the PS4 and PS3. YET the publishers have discovered people are dumb enough to sell their consoles and buy their old games AGAIN through download on the new system. So backwards compatability is a thing from the past ladies and gents. BC would interfere with a LOT of money.

I bought the R&C Collectors set for the PS3 because it's the first 3 games in one. And it's as shiny as the new ones (1080 or 720 3D!). And my old disks are scratched. And my PS2 is getting old. And it was only $30 for the whole set, and...

I've been a long time fan of the R&C series, and frankly, having played the games again on the Collectors disk, Insomnia earned my money for a second time around.

To think other's get this same type of experience by paying $60 for the newest CoD or Halo, I got 3 games upgraded for $30 total. When I compare it that way, it makes me feel smarter. tongue.gif

Yet they sold you the same stuff twice. Who is smarter you think?

Like Activision making you pay for MW1 maps in MW2. The same maps people payed for 2 years earlier. Who laughs hardest?

Do you have any articles which discuss this in more depth? I just can't see why let's say an i7 3960X @4.5Ghz couldn't emulate it since it's so much more powerful that the consoles' CPU's.

Now - I'm not familiar with the finer points of the CELL vs x86 architecture, however, what I see in the net is
Quote:
3.2 GHz Cell Broadband Engine with 1 PPE & 6 SPEs
, so its a " 7 core" unit at 3.2 GHz if looking at it in a very simplified manner. So I imagine, that if one would have a full command set available for the cell processor one should be able, in theory, emulate the cell processor at the very top end current hardware in my opinion, the cache bandwidth is comparable as far as I can see and a ~4.5 GHz i7-3930 with its quad channel RAM, 6 x86-64 cores and alltoegther 12 threads would be - in my opinion - pretty good candidate. GFX cards are not an issue, these could probably just brute force the GFX core performance hitting perhaps 30% load or so.

It depends on the accuracy of the emulator. It takes a 3GHz CPU (from 2011) to emulate the SNES (which was only about 20Mhz), approximations have to be made if you want to use less power. Here's much more detail if you're curious: http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2011/08/accuracy-takes-power-one-mans-3ghz-quest-to-build-a-perfect-snes-emulator/

But yes, a PS3 emulator can and likely will be made eventually.

Yeah that arstechnica article is really amazing. Emulation is just a really tough thing to get right. People don't realize that in order to emulate something you need another chip that is HUGELY more powerful. I'd tend to agree that a chip strong enough to emulate the CELL probabally doesn't exist in the consumer market yet.

The Xenos chip in the 360 might be a different story though.
