That's why we need to get angry and hulk smash anything that isn't 1080p@60fps locked.

With the amount of power being thrown around now console manufacturers should disable the ability to run at anything lower than the screen's native resolution, especially since hardware hasn't had an affect on game design for the last decade.

The thing is, if consoles use PC like hardware, they will innovate games even more with optimization.

Along these lines, I also believe it would make ports a little smoother and more accomodating. I can certainly understand being console exclusive at launch in certain cases, but permanently? Not as much.
I just don't want to have to buy a console for 'exclusives' that don't really bring out the value for me. I could just as easily get a new gpu to play all the new games I want on max definition. You don't have setting issues like that on console, but you also don't have a choice. It's a mixed bag really. I think everyone would benefit if console and PC's were more closely aligned.

I also hope OpenGL becomes the standard next gen as well. Sony's OS for the PS4 probably will still only support OpenGL, and/or they will make a deal with AMD to have drivers that only support OpenGL.
We do not need Direct3D/DirectX. All it does is make developers pay MS to use it.
Now the issue is that every platform gets its sales from exclusives. For MS, Forza and Halo. For Sony, Gran Turismo, Naughty Dog games, God of War (for now). And PC, Battlefield, Civilization, Diablo (ew). Nintendo, Mario, Super Smash Brothers. So without exclusives, they might as well not even come out with a console.

Although, it makes ports far easier. It's also easier for devs to write for an x86 chip, since I would assume that's what they are used to.

DirectX is free. I'm guessing the main reason MS has kept it is to try and make sure Windows/Xbox games aren't as easy ported to other platforms. When it was first made it was done to try and get developers developing for Windows, and then it became better than OpenGL for awhile, but at this point it really doesn't offer anything over OpenGL and should probably just die. My two cents.

I want MOAR 3D
Also, don't expect a 7850 equivalent. Even if the model name is a 7850, it'd be vastly under clocked. They can't have the same PCB stored in these tiny consoles. They can't have these elaborate cooling designs like we can in our desktops. They have to keep the tdp of the entire console under 300 watts (guess)

Actually just looked at the ps3 specs, the original models draw anything from 150-200 watts.
Ps3 slim is 34% less.

directx is free, to download and install to just use it to play games that are in directx.

I dont think its free for a developer to code a game in directX and sell it, without licensing fees to directX.
