Actually just looked at the ps3 specs, the original models draw anything from 150-200 watts.
Ps3 slim is 34% less.

I don't think it will be underclocked, the RSX is overclocked 100Mhz compared to most 7800GTX designs.

7850 is a cheap GPU in the PC world and with the bulk discount Sony would get it for it would be a great little GPU to have.
I was under the impression it'd be a Trinity APU with the normal semi-weak GPU but then with a separate HD7850? I may be mistaken though.

I can buy a 7850 for 165 euros off the shelf around here - thats with 20% VAT included. So its not THAT expensive GFX card. I can also build a pretty decent rig for ~300 from off the shelf hardware (including 20% VAT) with 7850 included which will be ok for gaming. So in my opinion its not that far fetched to get an console with 7850 included. A10 would ofc push the budget a bit above 300 mark, but if you already have dicrete gfx then for gaming it's not that essential - as long as you have couple of reasonably decent cores then you can push most games out there today without choking too hard.
A HD7850 is fine for 1080p 60Hz gaming, most games can max out with one for that.

The RSX is at 550Mhz while a 7800GTX is 430Mhz/450Mhz depending in the model, considering the insanely low heat output of a HD7850 (I run an OVed and OCed one, in furmark it doesn't break 60c with the fans at such a low speed I can't hear them, power consumption isn't high either..I wouldn't be surprised if it was clocked at 1Ghz.

Oh yeah I quite agree. Now that the 7000 series prices have fallen into a reasonable levels then these are in fact quite well performing parts even performance per dollar wise. For example, the 7870 at stock settings, which is not that far from 7850 performance wise can push 5400x1920 resolution with x4 AA in source engine at ~157 fps (The lost coast benchmark) at highest settings which that benchmark offers. The same card can push Crysis GPU benckmark at "high" settings, x8 AA at 2560x1600 resolution at ~45 fps average (lowest framerate about ~35 fps during the test). For reference this is approx 40 megapixels per second (had an argument with someone a day or so ago in some kind of similar thread if current gen PC's are capable of pushing the hypothetical "retina HUD" - human eye resolution is approx 8000x5000 lines, approx 120 degree horizontally, approx 90 vertically for covering the area where humans have binocular vision - so I ran a couple of benches to show that they can even with single GFX card)

The surprisingly good speed of the HD7850 and HD7870 is why I've got no doubt as to Sony and possibly even MS using them.

Most likely co-existing with the developers being able to choose how to use it, for example the APU may be used for FXAA over the entire scene or for physics calculations.

The rumours suggest that PS4 will ship with a dedicated GPU along side the 7660D in the A10 APU, rumours are pointing towards a 6670 or a 7850 to be used.
The 7800 GTX 512Mb edition runs at 550Mhz, remember the rumours floating around at PS3's launched that RSX had 50Mhz shaved off it's clock rate?
7850 will be a nice card to have, doubt it will be overclocked though, depending on how strict they want to be with the heat and power budget they may under-clock it.

If it comes with a HD7850 that can run in crossfire with the A10 then I have no worries for this console delivering the performance we want from it. It doesn't need a HD7970 to create much better games than currently. If I am correct the HD6670 would already be around 6x as strong as the RSX. So a HD7850 would be a huge step up. I mean on a PC a HD7850 already delivers very good results in 1080p. Let alone when a developer can optimise for it for months on end. I would be extremely happy with a HD7850.

I already showed on the last page that a 6670 is only 2-3x as fast when running in crossfire with the APU.
Not even APU + 7850 Crossfire is 6x faster across the board.

Considering the current memory prices I'm hoping for about 8 GB (plus hopefully at least 1 GB of GDDR5 for the discrete graphics card part). The 7850 would be strong enough to push the "next big thing" the 4k resolution displays at decent framerate and prettier graphics than current consoles. Considering that at 4k resolution the AA would not be needed at all. Assuming they put in there a connectivity which has sufficient bandwidth and I would be surprised if they would not use HDMI 1.4a or DisplayPort 1.2. Hopefully both , say 2x HDMI and 3x or 4x DP.|
