[IGN] Report: PS4 Dev Kits Surface - Page 6

sounds like some pretty weak, low-mid end specs, they got plenty of ram but a 4 core apu? even with crossfire how are they going to push innovation for another 6-8 years.

We're talking consoles here. The PS4 is simply not going to have a SBE processor and a GTX 680 nor does it need those high end parts...
This is really dissapointing. I really wanted one of the first parties to ship with a Pitcairn level GPU in 2013. If this rumor is true that is clearly not going to happen.

And don't even bother saying it's not possible because it's been gone over before here on OCN and it most certainly is. The biggest and only real barrier to it is that Microsoft and Sony don't want to sell loss leaders anymore. Sony lost every single dollar it ever made off the PS1 and PS2 with the PS3 and Microsoft is just now breaking even on the 360 project and will likely never make back the 5+ billion they sunk into Xbox 1.

And everyone snickering about this better realize that weak consoles are nothing but awful news for PC gamers.

Crysis 2 on Xbox 360 was unanimously praised as the best looking console game and it came out after Uncharted 2 and Ratchet and Clank..

Crysis 2 on 360 is not even close to Uncharted 2 graphics wise. The only game that really approaches Uncharted 2 or 3 on the 360 is Halo 4.

And the 'low poly' argument against Uncharted 2 and 3 is ridiculous and not even true. Enemies is Crysis 1 are around 25k polygons. Nathan Drake is 80k. Let's not talk about that anymore.

yeah but IIRC when PS3 and 360 launched, they had pretty much top end hardware, now about 7 years later that hardware looks ancient and there's no room for innovation. around 2005 they were boasting multi core processors, at a time where most pc gamers were making the transition to 64 bit, and had not even thought about multiple cores. with those spec's the ps4 already has a performance wall, and its not even released yet doh.gif

When they came out people Had Dual Core and 2Gb or RAM with 256Mb-512Mb GPUs. The money problem with Consoles was lack of memory.

Uncharted 2 and 3 look insane!
I never got to finnish Uncharted 2 as I borrowed it and never got to buy Uncharted 3 but I completed the first one.

Brilliant game, I need to go find one in a bargain bin or on amazon and the polygons and everything they're pushing on the PS3 is crazy as you said there's around 80k in nathan drake and It's possibly gotten larger since Uncharted 3.

I must ask myself, how the heck are they pushing that on a GPU around Nvidia 7800's hardware, the Cell was good for It's time but I believe that the AMD APU should be able to deliver a lot more power, I dont think they could use the SPUs in the Cell as effectively as proper processing cores which is why they were using to handle things such as Physics and graphical effects (Somehow)
If they use a dedicated GPU as said before then they could be pushing a lot more graphical power on their next system, an APU's processing power and rendering capabilities plus a dedicated AMD GPU running in crossfire?

An absolute GOLD mine, for consoles and PC gamers as programming should be a lot easier because of the architecture utilized in the system which could open up quicker PC ports to us.
But PS3 emulation? I dont see that happening because of Sony being difficult with their system hardware again, just look at the PS2 but that system should be able to handle PS2 emulation perfectly fine.

doh.gif hardly the case, that's like saying that everyone nowdays has a 3960x with 32GB of ram. in 2005 dual core was barely coming out, it was like the top top end those chips costed like $500-1000. so hearing about the consoles with tri-core or "cell" processors sounded damn impressive. PS4 specs just look seriously underpowered

I guess this doesn't happen on PC hardware because of the complex inner workings and It doesn't need to be done.
I found this the other day and the Cell's PPE is in there with 10,240 MIPs.
My assumption is that those SPUs are half of what the PPE can produce.

The Cell is both as great as it was hyped to be and a dying piece of tech imo.

It's just one of those things where the only way you are going to truly harness it's potential is if you have a large investment in it and the only people that do are 1st party Sony Studios and even then only Santa Monica, Guerilla and Naughty Dog have really truly figured it out.
