The reason they're moving to the APU design is to help leverage the advantages you get with GPU processing architecture that apply to things other than graphics, not replace the GPU entirely (yes that is an option, but I don't think the discreet GPU industry is going anywhere any time soon). It's basically the same as putting a bazillion little low power cores in your CPU, they're there to help make "GPU acceleration" not just a feature in a few odd programs, but an integral part of the way a CPU works.
I also think it makes the idea of a 16+ core processor kind of outdated, we already have thousands of cores in our GPUs, even a weak GPU has amazing parallel processing capabilities.
Even if the integrated GPU only ever gets used for physics it will be very worthwhile.

Except APUs are terrible compared to high-end dedicated GPUs. Whatever they use will need to be fairly high performance, high enough to at least last until the following generation 5-8 years later. I highly doubt a console that is looking to push next-gen graphics would even consider an APU without dedicated GPU as well.

And don't even bother saying it's not possible because it's been gone over before here on OCN and it most certainly is. Crysis 2 on 360 is not even close to Uncharted 2 graphics wise. The only game that really approaches Uncharted 2 or 3 on the 360 is Halo 4.

And the 'low poly' argument against Uncharted 2 and 3 is ridiculous and not even true. Enemies is Crysis 1 are around 25k polygons. Nathan Drake is 80k. Let's not talk about that anymore.

Not arguing anything against either game you guys are talking about, just wanted to mention that in 3rd person games the main character is generally much higher poly than any other character, and because they're generally close to the camera they rarely move to a lower LOD like other things. In the last game I worked on, LEGO Universe, the main character was around 45k polys (the game had to run on an Nvidia 5200...), but other human characters in the distance were usually at a lower LOD and around 10-15k polys. One large advantage to perform in an FPS game is that you don't have to render the character most of the time, giving you around 5-10% more poly budget (depending on the hardware you're aiming for).

This console cycle has lasted signifcantly longer than others though, and it seems likely that this APU will have a GPU crossfired with it. While an APU + GPU is not by any means a high-powered system, it seems extremely doubtful that the next-gen consoles will stay around as long as these have. This hardware simply doesn't have to last as long as these systems have before we reach the point where devs simply can't create the games they want to on the current hardware.

big $$$ for amd, they will have more to spend on R&D, which will bring more competitive CPU's and GPU's to the market, in turn lowering the prices of monopolistic competitors like intel biggrin.gif

Yeah, the industry disagrees with you. Its not like you have more objective proof. Fact is, most of the big name games are relatively close in terms of visuals. PS3 games can only match and sometimes beat 360 games when you dive into assembly and take advantage of the SPEs, basically freeing up cycles so that the RSX can do the heavy lifting.

And... these are just rumours after all. The current rumor from the person that leaked Durango alpha kit was that Durango will have a Pitcairn Pro GPU and PS4 will have a APU + Dedicated GPU

I say this is bad news. It is far too early for new hardware to be finalized, and I guarantee the consoles will be spec disasters, like the last gen was. If sony had just been a little more frugal in some places and spent more in others, the PS3 would have been amazing. Using DVD9 instead of BRD would have saved enough money to make the system SLI or triple the RAM. Or, better yet, design a better cell CPU, or simply have gone x64 on the CPU. Roughly $100 of the msrp on the PS3 went straight to the BRD drive, and it in so way benefited gaming. It makes me so sad knowing OCN could design a better Playstation than Sony.
