Drill size for M3?

Thread Starter
Hello Overclock.net!

I will drill some hole to mount a external radiator, the radiator uses M3 holes and M3 screws.
So is M3 3mm screw?
Does that mean I should use a 3mm drill bit?

thanks, grandpatzer

M3 is 3mm in diameter, that is correct.
I assume you're going to attach the radiator on the outside of the case with the screws going out towards it, correct?

What radiator, what case, and where will it(radiator) be placed?

The outer diameter of M3 is 3 mm. You will want a 2.5 mm, 3/32" bit, or #40 bit.

Indeed, I think I figured it out, I need 3mm drill then I'll push the screws though the case door from inside the PC, outside case door is 25mm spacers then lastly into the Radiator.

screw ---> Case door inside pc ---- > spacer putside case
> Radiator

I thought you needed to tap threads. In the case of an outright hole, yes, you'd need at least a 3mm drill.

Ive been suggested using 3.5mm drill to make sure the screw goes through, hopefuly 3.5mm is not too big so that the head of screw does not go through the case door.

It's only 0.25 mm larger on either side. I'd assume that the head is about 1 mm larger on either side. I would just use a 3 mm bit and wiggle it around after you make the hole. Or, you could just use a 1/8" bit (unless Sweden is that anti-inch) which is 3.175 mm.

Use 3mm first, if that isn't large enough step up. You can always make a hole bigger, you can never make it smaller.

If you want to tap the holes, you'll want to use a number 36 or so drill.

If you drill the hole too big, just use washers so the head of the screw doesn't go through.

#36 for a 3 mm thread? Are you insane? There won't be anything there to bite to. It's better to go small and let the tap cut the final minor diameter as well as the threads.
