I want friends to hear my music in Group Chat

Thread Starter
Hi, Can anyone tell me how I can play music from my pc and have my friends hear it when we are chatting in Group Chat in Battlefield 3.
I have tried many different things but feel I am missing a simple setting.
I'm running win 7 and x-fi forte.

Jesus Christ...all I'm asking if it can be done and if so how.
Maybe its not music that I want them to hear maybe just some funny audio I have.

Yea it can be done but the audio would be atrocious as the codec for group chat is not all that good. If you want them to hear it you can:

hold down the button so your teammates can hear what you pick up from the microphone.

or set as "what you hear" as the microphone.

either way it would just be overall better to do it over skype as the codec for skype is a lot better if you have a good microphone that is.
Small wonder.

Stone, what you're looking for is setting your Mic to Stereo Mix. If you need help on this, google it. Shouldn't be hard to find.

Can BF3 select a non-default recording device? If you have to make stereo mix default then you don't have a mic. I think you'd also play back there chat to them as well as the game audio. Might need to look at Virtual Audio Cable and a couple of cables and repeaters to achieve this if all the applications can't select non-default devices.

Awesome, Thanks everyone for you suggestions.
Yes I goggled this prob and got the same info as suggested but for the life of me I can't get it to work.
I have the "What U Hear" option and I set that to default yet when in chat know one can hear any other audio except what I say thru the mic.
I have an Auzentech X-Fi Forte 7.1 Sound Card and there are plenty of options maybe too many.
Does anyone have an X-fi card and have gotten this to work? If so what settings did you use?

I don't think you'll do it with a single soundcard, even if you get "What U Hear" working it is literally what you hear (the game and your friends chat and the music you want to play and not your chat (you'd need to monitor the mic to add your chat to that)), there's no option to select individual sources, you get either just the mic or everything.

Have you got onboard sound also? You'll need two sound devices, one to handle the mic and music and one for the rest - AFAIK that's the only way to keep them separate. If you have a second sound device you *SHOULD* be able to set it's "Stereo Mix" as the default recording device and use it's mic and a music player than can send to it (when it's not the default playback device (JRiver Jukebox or maybe Foobar)). Even with that you won't be able to hear the music (you'll only hear the default playback device (the game and your friends chat)), you could maybe solve that with a repeater from Virtual Audio Cable between the music player and the default playback device. And, even then, if BF3 just detects a mic and uses that it still may not work, TS and Vent for example can select any recording device in the system.

What your really after is a full featured multi-channel mixing desk and unfortunately that isn't quite what Windows sound is.

It can be done Windows 7, but it'll be extremely complicated, and requires multiple sound cards. Having an onboard + a dedicated soundcard will work.

Have the music come out Soundcard A (Soundcard A must have a "What U Hear" Option, or use a 1/8 audio cable to loop its out back in a line in), then double click on the what U hear for this device in Recording Devices. Using the "Listen to this device" option and play it back through Soundcard B. When you plug your headphones into soundcard B and play music through A, you'll now hear your music

Find your microphone, and Listen to this device through Soundcard A's playback. This will cause both the music and microphone to come out Soundcard A. This means you'll hear yourself through your headphones a fraction of a second later, which is pretty much unavoidable.

Then, all you have to do is set your Skype program or whatever to listen to Soundcard A What U hear, and both your game and the skype program to play through soundcard B. Don't have any applications picking up the mike directly.

Soundcard B will play your Mike, the music, and your game.

Soundcard A's What U hear will record the music and your Mike. I think.

Be very careful not to let your microphone pick up your headphones or you'll get a music loop.

Thanks for the help everyone. I do have two sound cards but to be honest it all sounds like too much hassel to bother with.
After searching google it seemed like it should be quite simple but maybe the tutorials where for specific voice chat programs although they never mentioned which ones.
Oh well I guess I'll concede defeat on this one.
Thanks again
