Problems with Xubuntu

Thread Starter
Hey Guys,

I have installed Xubuntu and been fooling around with it, installing the programs I will need in school and such. I have encountered two problems so far.
Sometimes when I start my computer, it stops before getting to the login screen, the screen is on, but it is plain black, and the only key it reponds to is the On-off key. When I press it, it comes up and shows that it have told the system to shutdown, and then shutsdown. Other times when I turn it on, it starts just fine, have no real clue as to what it could be, any clues?

Another problem I have come across is, that the computer is using alot more power than with windows installed. At full battery it could last 3:30-4:00 or something like that while browsing. Now it says somewhere around 2+ hours. I'm guessing I need to do something?
Edit: The windows power was with 4gigs of ram and a HDD and the linux is with 8gigs and a 256 gig SSD. Guessing that shouldnt affect the power usage by that much?

Hope you can help a noobie out thumb.gif

For the second point, it will be different for Windows, but I don't think by as much as that. What kernel are you using? I think around 3.5 a lot of improvements were made in the power department.

Try pressing esc on boot to see where its hanging. what video driver are you using? About the power issues have you tweaked the power settings? Like screen brightness?

I just installed the latest nvidia drivers, and havent encountered the startup problem again, so hopefully it is fixed thumb.gif

My kernel version is 3.5.0-17-generic.
I have tried downloading Powertop. It says it uses 25.7 W, after doing what ever it meant would give better battery life. It still says 2 hours when 100% Charged..

Well you have the kernel with the power saving feature so you should be getting the best battery life now thumb.gif.

The battery life could be attributed to the lack of power saving drivers/features. i'm tempted to say it's because Xubuntu isn't light weight which it isn't (not any more) but, knowing linux it probably doesn't have the power saving stuff enabled/present.

EDIT: late to the game. Also you should take look at Lubuntu some times, it is pretty darned light wight and is still user friendly and has Ubuntu repos.

I talked to a guy who knows Linux. He sais something about me having to setup the sleep/hibernation and such, to make sure that the cpu isnt using power if it isnt needed, he also said that I could turn off my optical drive to save power, the problem is, I have no clue as to how I do this.. Any ideas?

If 2 hours is the best I can get out of Linux, then I might go back to Windows, if it can give me nearly twice the uptime on battery :/

xfce should have a powersave setting manager in settings. make sure everything is on. and disable any services you don't need.

Well if it's for laptop there could be chance it doesn't have it if it's a driver thing, unfortunately I don't really know enough specifics to help out.
