So essentially "passing a hat around without putting anything in" is considered generous? how bout making a proper fundraiser using people with 100,000 of dollars worth?

Yep, http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/09/team-fortress-2-hats-raise-430-000-for-japan/

Till Apple actually donates from their own pockets I could really care less about them.

Secondly, I for one have never donated to The Red Cross by going through their website, every time I donate it is via a text donation. Why? Because it is far more simple to do so than opening up a browser, inputting in my donation amount, all my credit card information, my name, billing address, etc.

I used Paypal to donate on their site so there is no credit information given out.

This.

And also, I'm wondering why Apple won't accept iTunes credit... rolleyes.gif

All this is is a tax writeoff.

They could have picked much better charities than the Red Cross. I lost all respect for them when I volunteered in Joplin after the tornado disaster. All the Red Cross did was follow the news crews around and kick us independent volunteers out of an area just long enough for a few photo ops, then they left.

Sure, if they were taking a cut then OUTRAGE, but they're not.
Let's back off the bandwagon just this once ey, out of respect for the people struggling if nothing else.

This.

The point I'm getting at:
How many people will stumble upon the Red Cross website today compared to a large Tech company.
It's simply giving people an option they otherwise mightn't have had.
Bash them for their maps or something, but not for this, however small the effort made is.

This.

No there isn't, he'll bash Apple till he's in his grave regardless of how good they do.

is charity.

How do you know Apple isn't giving anything? All the companies you've listed so far have publically anounced themselves that they've donated that much. It isn't public record how much a company donates. And if Apple cares enough to impliment a red scross relief button into a music/store player that a ton of people have on their computers and make it just that much easier and more convienent, then they've likely donated something. But again, unless you have a list of public donations, then you'll never know.

Sometimes OCN is really pathetic. Apple is at least doing something, other large corporations are doing absolutely nothing at all.

Told you this was OCN mate thumb.gif

Gives $1,000
Apple is worth 500bn in the bank, gives nothing.

If you have no need to help then you are in the wrong thread and a huge hypocrite. Apple is doing more than you, you've not got much room to talk about them.

And no, Freedom of Speech does not exist on a private forum. Otherwise you'd be able to swear, talk about politics and religion and countless other things. There is a thing on forums called common courtesy, and etiquette that you either post something helpful, and stick to the topic, or don't post at all. It isn't hard. This isn't a thread for you to rant about Apple.

Could Apple donate? Sure. So could any one of other "oh-so-coveted-on-OCN" companies... though I'll let other users fill in the blanks with companies they hold so dear.
It's absurd how far blind Apple hatred will go on these forums, it's truly is just downright pathetic.

It is pathetic.

Swings and roundabouts.
What are they doing? They opened a donate button to the Red Cross. Fine. Are they giving anything? No. So, what's their angle here? Apple always have an angle. An NFL team gave $1m. Apple is worth $500bn and isn't giving anything.
That said, I'm sure they will give something.

Again, either donate yourself or shut up, seriously. You honestly have no room to talk about a coorperation that may or may not have donated ( you don't know so can't say anything, although with them doing this you can bet your butt they have donated something already ), and definitely has opened up a viable and easy way to donate for millions of users of itunes that make it essentially a one click move since most probably have their CC info saved into itunes already, it's just more convient.

Most companies do these sort of initiative for PR reasons.
Foolish liberals, a company will never donate on it's own money, it's communist redistribution of wealth!1!!1.

I dont think there's any way around that notion if a company was to start doing this. If Google (generally viewed as charitable via free services, etc, i suppose. But do not be mistaken, they are a for-profit company) started doing this, would people still be so upset?
