GTX 670 and Skyrim on Ultra 4xMSAA oddly low FPS. New driver issue?

Thread Starter
When I first bought my 670 I played this game on Ultra with 8x MSAA and never saw a drop, smooth as butter. I haven't played for a few months and decided to fire it back up, and now whenever I get close to facing a wall or look down at the ground, my FPS is in the 40s. I was running Nexus and had a High Res texture pack enabled, but I disabled it and am now running vanilla, but still the same result. Are the new official drivers to blame?

are you overclocking at all, have you tried a older driver to see if that is the issue

Yes, My GPU is at +100 core, and +100 memory, with a 105% power target. Pretty mild. I haven't rolled back, wanted to see if anyone running the drivers was having an issue first. I've had no crashes or anything of the sort.

You should be able to run 300+ on the memory. I bet its a memory bottleneck issue. As in bandwidth issue. Maybe try over clocking or memory More. My crap 670 can do +450 stable on the memory.
Also what is ur vram usage? That might be an issue as well...

2gb should be enough, ive got a friend that i modded skyrim for and he was using around 120 mods when i finished, and still not maxing out his 2gb 7850. also by power target, is that the power % in afterburner, or is that an nvidia thing.
you can also use gpuz and task manager to see how much of the gpu and cpu you are using, maybe you are being bottlenecked somewhere for some reason. or they arent running full capacity, or dropping to idle clocks for some reason.

If it's a big concern, I would definitely try rolling back to older drivers, just to see. Has this problem lasted through multiple re-starts, or did you just notice it and posted immediately? If not, I'd try a re-start first off.

You didn't, like, re-install the game and forget to patch it up or anything like that did you?

Is there anything else in your system that's changed in the interim since you last played it, when it was running fine? It's not like the OC on the card is 'new', right?

If you want to point me to a specific spot in the game where you're having the issue, I'd be happy to navigate to that spot and see what I'm getting for FPS there ... long as it's not really time-consuming to get there tongue.gif

I'm guessing that in these troublesome spots, the GPU Usage % is pathetically low, right?

Wow thanks for the replies y'all.

The problem is the same through restarts, and the game was never uninstalled, and was patched to the most recent updates. My sig rig has been the same since I first installed it.

Brettjv, I'm in Eastmarch in all the swampy parts, and when I look at the ground or close in on a wall or rock, my FPS drop to 40. If you could go there and check what you're getting that would be awesome.

I'll edit this post once I get some time to play and check my GPU and CPU usage.

Okay, I finally had some time to record some gameplay. The GPU and CPU seem to be properly loaded. When I'm walking around the swamps the usage is 99%. One thing I did notice though, is when I did delete everything but my saves and reinstalled, that my game would crash when loading the saves. Now if I backed up to the previous installation, loading my saves wouldn't cause a crash.

Funny, I had that problem before I got the new drivers.

Have you heard of step?

They go through driver settings and ini file tweaks and stuff that can help performance.

Our rigs are very similar. I think my issue is because I tweaked the ini per Nvidia's guide, then I updated Skyrim and the drivers. Something started to conflict.
